what i don't understand is... both gtk+2 and xfce4.6.1 cannot interfere with your alsa. so that's why i don't understand. And i assume that your alsamixer is showing right.

are you using snapshot or not? it's better to provide some basic info before asking helps. this really helps others to pin point the problems you are experiencing.
