Hi guys,
Im facing a strange problem and need some help to detect the cause.
First of all my system: Zenwalk always updated via netpkg, Openbox, Adeskbar and Tint2
Firefox [9-0] is always open in a window and Thunderbird [8.0] in another, the other 2 are for general purpose :)
Well, now the problem.
About 2-3 times a day I cant run apps from adeskbar nor from the openbox-menu. Im obliged to ctrl-alt-bkspace. last time happened 5 mins ago with only FF and TB running.
The strange thing is that I can surf the internet or read mails without any problem.
The bad thing is that I have no idea where to start the problem research.

Any idea?

Thank you in advance

You can first look in .xsession-errors in your homedir.

mmm.... I think that .xsession-errors is rewritten each time the Xsession starts since the info I actually see are related to the last, let me call this way, crash I had.
And apart some strange info which IMHO arent correct, the last thing I see is
Code:
(nautilus:4055): libnotify-WARNING **: Failed to connect to proxy
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/applet.py", line 44, in <module>
    import pynotify
  File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/gtk-2.0/pynotify/__init__.py", line 1, in <module>
    from _pynotify import *
ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/gtk-2.0/pynotify/_pynotify.so: undefined symbol: notify_notification_attach_to_status_icon

which has nothing to do with me :) since I dont use nautilus

Nope. [1]

All what I could try to do is a ctrl-alt-F2/Fx to gain another access but not sure it will work.
While was wrinting I had ... ahem... an idea. Since ive noticed that at least FF and TB continue to work its possible that if I have an mc (Midnight Commander) session open I could read that file or other files if you have other ideas.

To tell the truth there is a Mac around but the owner doesnt allow me to watch it since he knows that Im disaster prone :D

You are on a full snapshot ? with the latest xorg package ?
Did you already observe this problem in the past ? Or it is recent ?

you can open a terminal and do a "tail -f .xsession-errors"

This is the mirror I use
Code:
Synchronization with http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/zenwalk/i486/snapshot successful

and since xorg is not in my blacklist I suppose its updated anyway this is the list of my xorg files in /packages
Code:
xorg-cf-files-1.0.4-noarch-1.txz
xorg-server-xephyr-1.9.5-i486-72.1.txz
xorg-server-1.9.5-i486-72.1.txz
xorg-server-xvfb-1.9.5-i486-72.1.txz
xorg-sgml-doctools-1.7-i486-1.txz

The problem is recent, about 10-15 days. Before writing in the forum checked if there was a "moment" in which the system crashes but nothing.

in .xsession-errors now I have
13 occurences of
Code:
***** Imlib2 Developer Warning ***** :
This program is calling the Imlib call:

   imlib_free_image();

   With the parameter:

   image

being NULL. Please fix your program.

then
Code:
(exe:2826): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(exe:2826): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

then other 13 occurences of the message related to Imlib2

Hi bipbip,
it happened again 5 mins ago and now I think I know what's the problem.
this is the last line in .xsession-errors
Code:
No protocol specified
No protocol specified
(sakura:3197): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

and this is what I get when tried to run firefox from command line
Code:
root[pop.it]# firefox
No protocol specified
No protocol specified
Error: cannot open display: :0

it seems Im running on a display diferent from :0 and Im pretty sure this is correct since remind that once noticed I was on display :1. Dont ask me why and where to check. I really dont remember. :)
