I figured out that the reason Netpkg disappeared is that the entire Settings category has disappeared from the main menu. Right-clicking on the panel menu button doesn't give me a menu editor, and there seems to be no menu file in /home/myname/.config or /home/myname/.config/xfce4. Yet the Netpkg icon for one is easily found in /usr/share/applications, and opens the application if transferred to the bottom panel or desktop. If I open the icon in Geany, the code specifically notes the settings category:

Blackbird: That did it! Thank you very much. I don't know which update corrupted the desktop, but that simple command restored the menu. I see from the post that you went through this with F-Spot, and I appreciate your taking the time to share your experience...
