Hi All,
  Had same problems most folks here had and I just couldn't
get the ATi drivers to work. I then updated the kernel to 2.6.17.8 and
tried to run the ATi installer one more time. It seemed to take longer.
When I ran the fglrx module compiler script this time it succeeded.
I now have full hardware 3-D. I really don't know why I succeeded this
time but I won't complain. Thanks.

Output of
fgl_gears and glxgears. Red is without window focus. ;D

root[~]# fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
1364 frames in 5.0 seconds = 272.800 FPS
1577 frames in 5.0 seconds = 315.400 FPS
1613 frames in 5.0 seconds = 322.600 FPS
2320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 464.000 FPS
5220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1044.000 FPS
5220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1044.000 FPS
5220 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1044.000 FPS
5219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1043.800 FPS
5215 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1043.000 FPS
5174 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1034.800 FPS

5002 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.350 FPS
5002 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.352 FPS
5002 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.355 FPS
43537 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8707.351 FPS
50461 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10092.160 FPS
50474 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10094.655 FPS

50457 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10091.249 FPS
50492 frames in 5.0 seconds = 10098.284 FPS
34231 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6845.650 FPS

root[~]#
I know these tools are not to be taken too seriously
but these numbers are a vast improvement.

So, you didn't uninstall previous driver before the update? ATI recomends uninstalling it. Uninstallation script is /usr/share/fglrx/fglrx-uninstall.sh. Try to run it before installation of new drivers.
Or do you mean that dri is not working with composite enabled only?

I installed zw 3.0 so I had to reinstall the ati driver. I did netpkg kernelsource, then followed the instructions on the wiki. When I do fglrxinfo, the output shows ati and the name of my board (radeon). However, when I run fgl_glxgears, I get this error message:

Quote:
FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Permission denied)
__FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!

Any ideas? Thanks.

john

Adding the  following line to fstab will solve your problem:

/dev/tmpfs       /dev/shm         tmpfs       defaults         0   0

@Endler : Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (I think I've seen this solution before, but can't remember where.) BTW, what did I just add to my fstab? Thanks!

Peace Out.

Hello,

I am new in Linux and I have installed it in my laptop as a second Operating System (The first is WinXP):

Compac Presario 2100
Video Card: ATI Radeon IGP 320M (I saw that information under windows)

The Linux distribution is:
CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-22.EL)
X-window version: X.org 6.8

I downloaded the last driver from the ATI Web Page:
fglrx_6_8_0-8.28.8-1.i386.rpm

I just need to see the resolution at 1024x768. In this moment is at 800x600.

I was checking several pages and I understand that the ATI drivers have some problems and they need to configure something manually.

******I installed the driver as follow:

# rpm -ivh --force fglrx_6_8_0-8.28.8-1.i386.rpm

******And that is the result:
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
  1:fglrx_6_8_0            ########################################### [100%]
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.9-22.EL/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted

******I know that the driver is installed, but it doesn't function correctly.
******Trying the command:
# modprobe fglrx
******The result is the same:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.9-22.EL/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted

******I have checked if exists the file and his rights. It exists, and I give it
******all the permissions (chmod 777 fglrx.ko) The result is the same.

******I tried to enter without X window and executed the same sentence
******(modprobe fglrx) but it doesn't give me any message.
******I come back to the X-window mode and nothing happened

*****If I execute the command:
# fglrxinfo
*****The result is:
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: http://www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

I have reviewed the "/etc/X11/xorg.config" file and it still has the deafult configuration (about the "ATI Radeon Mobility U1" video card but it doesn't have the 1024x768 resolution)

  Somebody can helpme?

            Greetings

              Sugoicarl

What kernel do you use? As far as I remember, I had similar promlem when I had compiled kernel with build-in AGP.
(if you're compiling a kernel and want to use fglrx driver you should set the following options as modules or exclude some of them at all:
Code:
CONFIG_AGP=m
CONFIG_AGP_ALI=m
CONFIG_AGP_ATI=m
CONFIG_AGP_AMD=m
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=m
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m
CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA=m
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=m
CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS=m
CONFIG_AGP_VIA=m
..
CONFIG_DRM=m
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
)

The second reason for that behaviour can be loaded radeon module. Try
Code:
rmmod radeon
modprobe fgrlx

That should be done from console.

sudoicarl this forum is specific for zenwalk linux distribution you should maybetry asking that question on  http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions under section enerprise or newbie.

you can try to download ati driver installer from ati's page:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def ... olderID=27

if you downloaded this installer in your home dir than make it so executable:

chmod +x /home/'your user name'/ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run

than run it:

/home/you/ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run

when it finished run: aticonfig --initial and reboot.

if that doesn't work, try this:

http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php/topic,914.0.html

under same subforum you have a guid how to compile a custom kernel, but i am not sure if the guid works for redhat (centos).

??? why modprobe radeon?..is not the correct driver..
modules are fglrx and eventually agpgart..radeon module is a "dummy" driver that provide to ATI ,direct rendering even with mesa driver...
tell me if i understand because i've no read this post from beginning.. ;D
