Post subject: How do I get the new USB automount to work?
PostPosted: Tue Apr 04, 2006 9:01 pm

According to the announcement about Zenwalk 2.4 it has "a brand new USB automount system" that "... does not require any user intervention"

Do you have to do anything to get this to work or should it work after the upgrade to 2.4, because it doesnt!

I was wondering the same thing.  I've been keeping up to date with all the updates are they've been released, so I should already at Zenwalk 2.4, with the exception of adding any brand new programs.  I installed Gnomebaker (which installed find but didn't add a menu icon as far as I've been able to find), but didn't see any mountpointmanager package.  Are there any other packages that are new to 2.4 I should add to bring me up to a full 2.4 distro?

I have been doing a bit of investigation and it seems the USB automount works with some deices but not others.  I first tried it with a digital camera on a USB lead, which Zenwalk doesn't detect under any circumstances.  Even if you boot up with it plugged in.

Then I tried it with USB memory stick.  That was auto-mounted but done so very subtly.  I was expecting some sort of message or Thunar to open but nothing obvious happens.  You have to click on the 'devices' icon on the toolbar to see it is mounted.  Then if you go to /mnt you will see a USB folder has appeared.

So it sort of works, pity about the digital camera though.

Vulpus,

Your digital camera should be supported (any usb-storage device is supported).

To be convinced that it is supported, do "udevmonitor" while plugging your device.

Take care to set the partition type ID to Win95 (vfat) with fdisk or cfdisk (type "t" in fdisk ).

USB storage devices are often badly configured : filesystem is VFAT, but the partition type ID is not set (or set to "Linux") !

So it can usually be mounted manually, but an automount system must guess what filesystem has to be used to mount the device, so it relies on this ID.

Have fun

JP

I am sorry but i do not understand what partition it is I need to edit (/dev/usbstore?) or how to go about it.  ???

This is the response I get from udevmonitor when I plug in my camera:

UEVENT[1144229603.650198] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/usb1/1-2
UEVENT[1144229603.667869] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/usb1/1-2/1-2:1.0
UEVENT[1144229603.668188] add@/class/usb_device/usbdev1.9

When I plug in my USB memory stick I get the following:

UEVENT[1144229738.428645] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/usb1/1-2
UEVENT[1144229738.439504] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/usb1/1-2/1-2:1.0
UEVENT[1144229738.439615] add@/class/scsi_host/host3
UEVENT[1144229738.439646] add@/class/usb_device/usbdev1.10
UEVENT[1144229743.441161] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/usb1/1-2/1-2:1.0/host3/target3:0:0/3:0:0:0
UEVENT[1144229743.453944] add@/block/sda
UEVENT[1144229743.474547] add@/block/sda/sda1
UEVENT[1144229743.476954] add@/class/scsi_device/3:0:0:0
UEVENT[1144229744.099504] mount@/block/sda/sda1

Post subject: Cannot mount a digital camera
PostPosted: Fri Apr 07, 2006 8:07 am

I have changed the title of this thread as it seems that the automount function DOES work for 'standard' USB devices.

However, try as i might I cannot get Zenwalk to detect my digital camera.  I have tried all sorts of suggestions I have found on the web for manually mounting it but all to no avail.

My second course of action was to try to install Gphoto, both from the Zenwalk repository and compiling from source.  Unfortunately that would not even install. (yes I did install libphoto).  I have even done a fresh install of 2.4, instead of an upgrade.

So if anyone out there has succesfully connected a digital camera to Zenwalk I would love to hear how you did it.  :-\

PLease try to upgrade the following packages :

- sysfsutils
- udev
- pcmciautils

1) do : "netpkg sysfsutils udev pcmciautils"

2) do "netpkg upgrade-config"

Regards

hy
new udev is very simple
Code:
/dev/hda5        swap             swap        defaults         0   0
/dev/hda1        /                ext3        defaults,noatime 1   1
/dev/cdrom       /mnt/cdrom       iso9660     noauto,user,ro   0   0
/dev/fd0         /mnt/floppy      auto        noauto,user      0   0
devpts           /dev/pts         devpts      gid=5,mode=620   0   0
proc             /proc            proc        defaults         0   0
/dev/tmpfs       /dev/shm         tmpfs       size=10%,mode=0777 0   0
/dev/sdb1         /media/sdb1         auto        noauto,user,rw,exec 0   0
/dev/sda1        /media/sda1        vfat        user,noauto,rw 0 0
/dev/dvd         /mnt/dvd         iso9660     noauto,user,ro 0 0

this is my revised /etc/fstab..because i use the storage media applet from the kickbar to mount volume..instead of creating an icon on the desk
this applet uses /media as mount media/sdb1 and your automount now will work correctly..:D
udev udes others devices..not /dev/usb but new sda1 and sdb1 for example
just correct fstab and add new devices and mount point
create mkdir /media/sda1 and/or /media/sdb1...save
and now your storage will be mounted automatically

those are my kernel modules i've choosen

Code:
ehci_hcd               18952  0
usb_storage            45504  0
usbserial              17896  0
usbmouse                2304  0
usbhid                 26528  0
uhci_hcd               20496  0
ohci_hcd               12292  0
usbcore                68996  8 ehci_hcd,usb_storage,usbserial,usbmouse,usbhid,uhci_hcd,ohci_hcd

PLease explain me, I don't understand what you've done???

Are you really automounting usb devices ? or manually mounting em via the panel applet ?

Confusing me ;)

I tried the above but I am afraid it made not difference to the automount issue.  On the bright side I have got Gphoto to work.  I was using the command 'Gphoto' instead of 'Gphoto2'!  Doh!!!

So at least I can now access my camera via the CMI.

Just curious, how exactly would I verify the correct ID's and if wrong, set them?  I have an external XFS formated Hard drive that the automount does not mount ...
