Hi. I'm new to this distro. I like how light it is. I'm having problems using my USB 2.0 pendrive or my dap. It seems they work as if they were USB 1 (or worse). They automount well but when I have to write on them they work really slow. How can I improve their performance?

Thanks.

I expirienced that too - writing to USB devices is really slow. While googling I found this thread : http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-List ... /3252.html
In that's case it was ub module which caused the trouble. I haven't digged into it yet, but it looks like to solve the problem it's necessary to recompile kernel, since I havent found ub module in my lsmod output.

So if anyone know how to resolve it, please let me know.

Thanks.

PS: Thanks to the Zenwalk Team for the great job !

I've got this problem. To solve it, I re format my usb stick with fdisk in a CLI. It seems that the partition type ID is not set. Set it to Win95 (vfat) with fdisk or cfdisk (type "t" in fdisk ).

If you use your memory stick under linux only, try to use ext2 filesystem  ;)

Yep, that fixed it.

Thanks a lot, Crocus.

Is there any other way to use it without reformating? If you have to reformat any usb stick that comes to your computer. It is useless in my opinion.

It seems the usb works perfectly when mounted manually, but automount is a really cool feature.

Thanks

2gor :
There is another thing you can try :
open file /lib/udev/usbmount.sh and find the line which contains smth like
MOUNTOPTIONS="noauto,user,rw,owner,exec,sync,dirsync,uid=0,gid=100,umask=0"
Now remove sync,dirsync options.
You should keep in mind that doing so your'e disable auto syncronization, so you'll have to manually issue 'sync' command before removing USB stick.

At http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_USB_Mass_S ... ock_Driver I've found more information regarding the so called "Low Performance USB Block Driver". Below is the relevant quote.

Quote:
Beware the Low Performance USB Block Driver

If your USB disk is shown as /dev/ub/a then you're using the low Performance USB Block Driver (Device Drivers -> Block Devices -> Low Performance USB Block Driver). You will find that your transfer speed is crippled by this driver, because it is designed to meet the lowest common denominator of features for seriously lightweight (or cheap) devices. Disable it and use the usb-storage module (devices > usb) instead if you can.
