Nice move - wouldn't otherwise get into zenwalk (Why not?)

But your scripts has some serious errors - try it as normal user with fakeroot

build-fontconfig.sh returns an error:

SGMLS/Output.pm is part of linuxdoc-tools and installed here: /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/ but perl doesn't include this path in @INC neither does /usr/bin/sgmlspl!
Where does perl gets it's include path set?

I fixed this and got an nearly empty package - 'make install' does an immediate system install!!!

Please add 'DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg' to your ZENBUILD's - build-cairo.sh lacks also proper configure options!
Please add --prefix=/usr, --enable-directfb ... have a look in /usr/src/gtk+2-2.12.11/build-gtk+2.sh.

The same holds probably true for freetype2-ubuntu and libxft-ubuntu ZENBUILDS.
Why not using the original scripts and simply adding the patches -
it is less error-prone and easier to maintain (diff -Nau build-script.old build-script.new)
