Zenwalk Live 5.2, the latest Zenwalk in its Live CD format is ready!

Based on Zenwalk Current and a slightly modified version 6.2.3 of the Linux Live Scripts, Zenwalk Live is meant to be an almost perfect clone of Zenwalk standard, although it now uses a slightly modified kernel in order to unlock specific Live CD features such as, for example, the re-mastering of Zenwalk Live on a USB key with persistent changes.

As always, Zenwalk live features several specific Live CD gui tools which you will find in Zenpanel (Zenwalk's system configuration panel)... Zen Installer will enable you to install Zenwalk standard on your machine while Live Clone, a WYSIWYG Live CD re-mastering utility, will enable you to generate your very own customized Live CD that will carry any of the changes you may have applied to your Live CD session, whether these changes were simply cosmetic, like a change of wall paper or panel widgets or whether they were more involved like the suppression or addition of different programs, users, etc..

Essential recovery & system tools such as LiloFix, Gparted & Testdisk have not been forgotten & are also available... just in case!

Evidently, Zenwalk Live 5.2 includes all the latest improvements from Zenwalk 5.2 recent release: the suspend and resume refined functions, the new support for blue-tooth input device, the refreshed artwork for the booting menu, boot splash & Xfce environment, as well as the nearly 500 changes to software packages, including Linux kernel 2.6.25.4, Xfce Desktop 4.4.2, Netpkg "new generation" version 4, Xorg version 7.3, Mplayer coupled with the latest dvdnav (DVD menus support), etc..

You can find the complete list of Zenwalk Live 5.2 packages here:
http://zenlive.linuxish.net/build/5.2/pkg.list

If you didn't have the opportunity yet to try out Zenwalk, now is your chance to experiment with this fully functional, full fledged, working live sample. Do not hesitate to visit our website, wiki or help forum for any further documentation or questions:

Thanks for the Live distro.

As a total or complete or absolute n00B I am used to
that all CD or DVD are live as in to be used as a live CD
and no need to install so I got very surprised that it didn't
warn us noobs that the latest DW presentation and the iso
link didn't say it is only an installer iso.

I mean to a noob it is not easy to know such when my live
iso is named zenwalk-5.2.iso and the gnome zenwalk-gnome-5.2.iso

To me that looks like the live. I mean teh live doesn't say it is a live
in the iso and the gnome doesn't say that it is an installer cd in the iso
so I got fooled to download and burn it and to my surprise it ask about
partitioning and such and show no sign of being a ordinary "Live" cd at all.

Yes I know that this is what the Linux users prefer but not all of us are
into such convention and habits. Remember that 90 percent of us never
have partitioned a hd ever so we are not going to do it unless we have
tried out if teh Linux or BSD or any OS actually work on our gear.

Zenwalk live works very good on my gear. One of my five faved distros
so I look forward to test how much slower the gnome final release was.

I'm not prepared to do a full install with partitioning. Frugal install and CD
works well for my needs.

Will the latest be awailable as "Live"? Or is that the one I have already?

I don't think the GNOME one is available as a Live CD yet, gapan made it as an installer CD only. Most people are trying it in a virtual machine like VirtualBox or VMWare, but this can be difficult for the inexperienced. Maybe if you had a small spare partition on one of your PCs, say about 4GB, you could just do a test install? It doesn't need to stay there, but those are the only two ways of testing it currently.

Also, if a Zenwalk ISO is Live, 'live' will invariably be in the title/filename. If not, it's safe to assume it's installer-only.

Even i tried out ZenLive 5.2, it was awesome.

I got few suggestions..

1) Possible to provide a combo box in LiloConf UI to choose which HDD's MBR the lilo should write, i had to use cli ver of lilo to install in my second one.

2) If possible, link ZenInstaller to desktop.

Now i got a doubt, when the Zen boots, after loading vmlinuz, it checks bios data, what exactly its needed and what it is reading?

More will come as i find more :D
Thanks

I'd like to be able to choose keyboard layout directly on boot, like Ubuntu does... :-X

You already can - along with locale data. Press tab from the Lilo menu and change the en_US for keyboard and locale to the values that you need.

Its not as direct as a menu entry, but it works fine....

If you choose other languages from the menu... say Italian, as an example... the Italian keyboard will be selected along with the Italian locale.

If I press TAB, I get this:
Code:
> /boot/vesamenu32.cfg menu_en.cfg

What should I type to select the keyboard?

And...please note that if the right keyboard is not selected, I probably won't be able to type anything ;) That's why I find this one a "key feature".

OK, but sometimes happens that who use a computer doesn't speak the same language of the keyboard.

Don't press tab in the language session, ;)

Press tab later on, on the line that says for example: Start Zenwalk live in whichever language you chose & then modify your keyboard according to whatever combination suits you best.

:)
