Post subject: Zenwalk Gnome 5.2 beta
PostPosted: Fri Aug 08, 2008 6:10 pm

We are proud to announce that Zenwalk Gnome 5.2 beta is ready for testing. Based on Zenwalk current, it features the latest stable Gnome 2.22.3 desktop, customized with beautiful Zenwalk artwork. Also included are linux kernel 2.6.25.4, the latest X.Org 7.3 suite of X servers and the next generation of the Netpkg package manager. Zenwalk Gnome follows the "one app per task" Zenwalk philosophy and provides a complete programming environment for coders. The Gnome Desktop has never felt this fast before!

http://pnboy.pinguix.com/gapan/zengnome ... .2beta.md5

The iso weighs 598MB!

Changes since the alpha version:
1. All known problems/bugs have been fixed.
2. It should work under VirtualBox now
3. Evince has taken its place in the iso again
4. The metacity compositor is now turned off by default, as there are problems with it and the nvidia open source driver. There is a menu entry under the Settings menu that will help you switch it on if you want and your graphics card can handle it. This should make it faster in older computers too. Tell me what you thing about it.

Feel free to report any problems or success stories! :)

cool by now. What config (HW) are you using (just to know if it will run just fine or may not)? And why you are not using the default Gnome panels? ok i know the look and feal of ZW but i think it should have the default Gnome panels. It's Gnome not XFCE.

Well, I'm normally using it in a Core2Duo laptop and in another CoreDuo laptop with 1GB of RAM in both. But during the last week I've installed it in a P3 650MHz with 384MB RAM and I think it works as fast as xfce does, except login time which is a bit longer with gnome, but not that much. The metacity compositor is off in the P3 of course.

And the panels are that way because that's the way Zenwalk looks. First it's Zenwalk, then it's Gnome.

Glad to see more Zenwalk development.

I wonder, is the same GNOME we get by installing gnome-meta in netpkg?

Yes, it's the same gnome you get with gnome-meta.

Whenever I play avi, wmv, or mpg files, my whole system freezes (but my mouse can still move, slowly). The only way out of it is to do a hard shutdown.
Maybe my install was corrupted...
Anyone else getting system freezing when trying to play videos in this edition?

Stillborn, You talk about Vector Linux and their SOHO Deluxe version.

I have the SOHO Preview in frugal install on my Aopen Mini MD915
and it works great but I am as my user name say. A newbie so I
fail to know what GEM I have. But it works best of all the distros
I have tested since I started trying out distros Jun 29 2008.

Zenwalk is almost as good. On par or better than NimbleX which
also are good.

Both Zenwalk and Nimblex fail to do clean shutdown on my quirky
machine which are hard to satisfy. Puppy fails to do clean shut down
on it and Ubuntu Heron the latest fails too and most fails except
Vector SOHO who does a clean shutdown. So there is something good
about them. :)

And surprise. The ultra small distro SliTaz weighting in at some 25 MB
does a clean shutdown on my shoebox computer. So size is not all.
GoblinX does a clean shutdown. So it is possible to do it.

I want to have a frugal install of Zenwalk too. Nimblex, Puppy, Goblinx,
already are frugal install and they successfully save all changes on my
NTFS HDD but I have only managed to boot in frugal but not save in
frugal with Vector so there is something they do differently that need
special cheat codes in the Grub menu.lst at bootup or some special file
in the vector directory at root.

But I will ask about it in another thread to not go astray in this one.

Thanks for letting me test this distro.
