thanks!....I see why is a complicated feature to have so soon....

It seems that Fedora is a little bit ahead of us in this area. Hope to see it some day in Zenwalk.

An issue I experienced when installing 5.4 was not being able to install lilo to the root partition. I got a message along the lines of "There was a failure Lilo has not been installed". I tried a couple of times with the same result. I have never had this issue with 5.2 so am assuming that it is likely to be a bug in 5.4, although I don't know that any changes have been made to the installer. Could someone confirm this issue one way or t'other?

I have not been able to get any of these beta releases up and running in VirtualBox since the very first beta release that was announced via the news letter. All of the releases posted in this thread have crash the VM right after exiting out of "Create Users" dilalog box during the initial boot setup.

Found a workaround that always works. When Zenwalk finishes installing packages and prompts for a reboot with ctrl-alt-del, you reboot and in the lilo prompt enter: Zenwalk 1. Log in as root and
Code:
ifconfig eth0 up
dhcpcd eth0

You can now download vboxguestadditions following your guide and reboot to finish the installation normally.

Heh, I don't think Zenwalk has corporate funding like Fedora does.... I'm still waiting for a 64-bit Zenwalk, but not holding my breath.

AFAIK, fedora project has huge peeps working on it. Red Hat backs it up. All the packages finalized in Fed goes to their Enterprise version.

So you can compare these 2 projects here. Well yes, lets take this feature into ours, but not really soon... :-\

I'm posting from a fresh install of 5.4 beta 1...and it works perfectly.
I installed it in a dedicated partition by installing from usb (using unetbootin). All is good, no more problem with Lilo like in 5.2 installer.
nv driver automatically choosen, good resolution, usb scanner and usb wifi decteted when providing the good file (firmware for sane for the usb scanner, windows ndis driver from the usb wifi).
I like the unified wicd network manager.
I also like most of the changes made in XFCE 4.6 which is still in beta, but it seems stable enough for playing with.
Hibernation is working (at least with nv driver).
PAM is working with gksu with glasspane although not working with my current box upgraded to 5.4. Maybe an old config file still there...

The bad point for me : I dislike the new background (desktop, bootsplash, gdm theme).

Good distro :)

[Edit] The Disk Manager is really a killing feature !! This will make configuration really easier for newbies, or even everybody.

Hi JRD, I'm trying to install Zenwalk 5.4 beta using unetbootin but Zenwalk always complains about some missing directories. I tried all the two options ("Install from CD" and "Install from pre-mount directory" with paramenter "/mnt/H-USB" - I had mounted my usb in the previous step as "H-USB" - was it correct?) but the problem still remains. Please tell me how did you overcome that :)

You've got the same problem I've got when first trying.
Here is the solution :
- boot to your usb key.
- select the keymap in the menu.
- exit the menu.
- mount your usb key in a directory not in the tree /mnt, for example for me :
Code:
mkdir /install && mount /dev/sdb1 /install

- return to the menu by hitting "setup".
- choose install, follow the steps, then choose "install from pre-mount directory". Specifiy "/install" there, and you're done :p

I was waiting for this release for some time now and knowing that it only needs the final release of xfce is music to my ears. I see the last release is # 15 November 2008 Xfce 4.6 Beta 2 (Hopper), so ... fingers crossed!

BTW, some screenshots would be nice ( for those of us who can't reinstall their systems right now D!! )

I like the changes made to 5.4 so far. The disk manager is pretty cool, the new menu is easier to use, and everything seems to work better over all (like the suspend and hibernate functions). Also, the resolution for my monitor was automaticly set up correctly, unlike 5.2 which I had to manually configure. The only thing that did not work for me that I couldn't fix was the "Root Terminal" option in the menu. When clicked, it would bring up the gksu dialog but after the password was entered, it would not open the terminal. Gksu worked fine with thunar though.

Edit: I also could not play dvds, it would say something like "stream not found." If you want more info on that, I can give you the output, just ask.

Hey Hero,
I hope that's a desktop computer you're talking about standby and hibernate working on?
Why is it Linux doesn't know how to do stuff like that on desktops? I could probably ALMOST leave Windows entirely, if standby worked correctly.
