Let me explain something :

Problems with hibernation result from hardware being unable to recover the working state after its driver data has been restored from swap. If hardware manufacturers were willing to provide technical specifications to Linux developers, it would be easier to code drivers that suspend without problem.

Microsoft pay , Linux devs pray !

jp

btw : here I can hibernate and resume more than 10 successive times without any problem : audio, network, usb devices , webcam, ... everything's fine..... and I have a Windows computer at work that can't suspend properly...

downloaded and installed zenwalk 5.4 gnome on my acer aspire one this morning, and except for the SD-memory expansion everything works like a charm \!D/

If I get the card reader working I think this can be keeper <3

I like the changes made to 5.4 so far. The disk manager is pretty cool, the new menu is easier to use, and everything seems to work better over all (like the suspend and hibernate functions). Also, the resolution for my monitor was automaticly set up correctly, unlike 5.2 which I had to manually configure. The only thing that did not work for me that I couldn't fix was the "Root Terminal" option in the menu. When clicked, it would bring up the gksu dialog but after the password was entered, it would not open the terminal. Gksu worked fine with thunar though.

Edit: I also could not play dvds, it would say something like "stream not found." If you want more info on that, I can give you the output, just ask.

Hey Hero,
I hope that's a desktop computer you're talking about standby and hibernate working on?
Why is it Linux doesn't know how to do stuff like that on desktops? I could probably ALMOST leave Windows entirely, if standby worked correctly.

I have an old dell desktop

you should post on beginners or problem, but my guess is controlpanel->kernel modules-> click on mmc_core and mmc_block so they show on the right side, apply, exit and test. If it doesn't work report it on the right part of the forum (-> it might be an other kernel module, but shouldn't be that hard to solve). Add the output of lspci and lsusb (commands launched as root) in your post.

I have a home-built computer with an AMD Athalon64 and hibernation worked in 5.2 and stills works in 5.4beta (I did the upgrade per the wiki not a fresh install). Still can't get the monitor to come back after suspend. I hibernate nightly. In 5.2 it always worked, now it works sometimes and sometimes it hibernates about 20 seconds and then starts back up. Not a question for help, just a comment about hibernation in the beta.

Another comment is that I really don't like the new menu. When I right click there is nothing that I would use. I have to go down to applications and then find what I want. I like the application menu find but it seems to be out of order for me. I am sure that whoever wrote had a purpose in mind, just doesn't fit for me. Wish I could edit it and am working on that.

After that many bad comments about the new Desktop-Right-Click-Menu, I've got to write a positive one: :)
I really like the new right-click menu as with the old one it was always so complicated to access functions like adding a new file to the desktop. The new one is no problem for me as I only use the Zen Button Start Menu in the top-left, probably as I'm used to maximize most windows so that I always have at lest one maximized and can't access the desktop. Maybe it's also still a Windows habit, don't know. Anyway I really like that menu as for me the old on was really confusing, it was quite complicated to create a file on the desktop, you had to right-click another file/folder previously. ::)

I've not tested the 5.4 BETA Installer, but I'm running Snapshot on all my by now 3 comps. But I will probably tomorrow test the new Installer. Let's see how it does.

EDIT: The GDM config problem in the Zenpanel is probably due to this line in the zenpanel.desktop file:
Code:
exec=zenpanel

I changed this to:
Code:
exec=gksu zenpanel

Now it's gone and everything works again like a charm. Maybe this was just forgotten or is it intended that there's no gksu statement?

Just for kicks and laughter I did not go for GRUB but installed LILO.

(This is from the article).

He means: "instead of using the already installed grub by updating it to boot Zenwalk I wanted to try Lilo to see how it works".

Funny that there are so many comments about one sentence. ;D

I think most people would like the option to install either LILO or Grub :)

It could be useful, but it would out of the "Zen philosophy": one mainstream application for each task.

Well, it's not like you can use Lilo and Grub at the same time, right? :) I don't think any distro out there offers that option. Zenwalk would be breaking some ground if it gave the option of using Grub.
