Zenwalk 6.2 has been released !

Zenwalk 6.2 is mostly new code (nearly all packages have been updated), and the base system has been slightly modified (EXT4, kernel 2.6.30.5). The switch to LZMA for package compression has reduced the overall size of the ISO image (490MB) while allowing us to provide more applications and drivers.

You will notice that our installer is getting simpler with each new version : as usual, our goal is to create the easiest GNU/Linux installer. From now, the user doesn't have to perform any hardware selection : any part of the computer's hardware is automatically detected, the installer will just ask for a few approvals.

Here's a summary of the important changes :

- Kernel 2.6.30.5
- LZMA compression for packages
- EXT4 as main filesystem
- The new XFCE 4.6.1
- Openoffice 3.1.0 (fast optimized version)
- New Netpkg featuring a refined interface, rollback support and instant install with dependencies control
- A complete set of HP printers drivers are included
- Faster boot (tuned init scripts)
- bus auto-detection in the installer (will choose appropriate kernel depending on the architecture, sata, pata, scsi)

We believe that the 6th branch has reached maturity , both as a professional, and multimedia operating system. Our package repository is growing and can now be compared to the big ones.

Have fun !

Wow great news Jp and the team.. Kudos to all.

Here is the Torrent File: http://torrent.trunat.fr/torrents/zenwa ... so.torrent
Thanks to Remy Hubscher for uploading this torrent.

@JP,
Is it possible to add Remy's Torrent link to official release note at zenwalk site i.e http://www.zenwalk.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=100 along with the download mirrors?

Any body looking for a torrent link will be able to get instead of asking at forums.

Unfortunately, the experience on Intel 865G has not improved since the earlier beta.

With the default 2.8.0 intel driver, X freezes moments after starting to use it. After hunting down the "extra/" directory (which wasn't on the ISO meaning this requires another system since with the default driver X tends to not stay up long enough to fire up a browser) the 2.8,1 and the 2.7 driver there don't improve anything and the 2.6 and 2.5 drivers bomb out completely with "couldn't allocate memory for BO front buffer" (AGP aperture size not the problem).

Now, please don't get me wrong, this is not in any way intended as something anyone should particularly care about, but for me this means I won't be using zenwalk anymore. When I reported this earlier for the beta, I wound up in an email conversation with the X packager(s) and as such, could've been easily asked to test something. Heard nothing though and now the release doesn't work not just once but five times. Originally moved over from slackware due to lacking the time to always fix things myself -- will just have to go Fedora or SuSE I suppose. Have had these and other X driver problems since zenwalk 6.0 now.

Best of luck of course. Zenwalk's a nice project. Just not for me at the moment.

Rene, if you haven't wiped Zenwalk yet, please try
http://www.cm.ph.bham.ac.uk/software/ze ... 6-62.1.tgz
in place of the later Intel drivers.

It works for me, and if it works for anybody else, we should keep it.

@ markc

I had actually wiped it but given the direct link to try I thought I'd reinstall. Yes, works. Without DRI for now but when I was testing multiple distributions earlier (at the beta stage) I believe I noticed this is not in fact the driver's fault, but the kernel's. It's failing to allocate texture space. For now I don't hugely care about DRI in fact and given that a later kernel upgrade might fix things, it'll do for a bit I guess. Thanks for the link.

I'll give it another shot. Obviously, zenwalk is of a different philosophy than Fedora or SuSE and the latter don't agree with me all that well.

I have the same problem than Rene, but this driver is works for me too. Thanks a lot :).

Hello everyone, I desperately need help, I have successfully installed zenwalk 6.2 on my box along with crunchbang, I have installed zenwalk to partition 1 ( sda,1) crunchbang is on partition 3 ( sda,3) and swap is on partition 2 ( sda,2 ), I tried to install lilo, but it failed so I want to add zenwalk to my existing crunchbang grub, but I don't seem to find how to add zenwalk to my grub, any help would be very appreciated. I can boot to crunchbang.
Jessie.

hard drive layout
( sda,1 zenwalk ) ( sda,2 swap ) ( sda,3 crunchbang )
