Hi,

looks like Brasero needs hal to detect the DVD drive. But hal is not installed by default. Is there any other way to get that working?

The MoD

May be launch brasero from konsole and then do insert the CD. See if you get any debug info on konsole. Or else you can look for dmesg

Seems like XFCE is too buggy still Jp. May be RC3 wont be final for now. Thunar is expected to be faster. But isnt. It could lead to a big FAIL when released final.

OK, so let's wait for a few months. Maybe the next XFCE release will provide a faster startup time for Thunar : Zenwalk 7.0 delayed to 2012 because Thunar takes 2 seconds to start (joke).

The new Thunar is faster than the old one, except for startup (due to GIO initialization imho). Mostly everything else is faster in XFCE 4.8 :)

Its not just thunar here JP. There are many other stuffs, the users are reporting as your already aware off. And nope, not 2012. May be few more days or weeks.

btw Jp, could this be the solution for thunar problem? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=113811

Not too much to say.I don't have problems whit xfce.
At first boot I note missing in panel terminal. I drag from the menu to the panel and appears totem. The second time works correct.
Libreoffice has this notification that need java but finally start. As practically I never use Open I have no idea of the reason to change.
I will prefer to have Soundconverter installed by default, it will save some problems to the media users.
Intel 2.14 needs modeset and in my case also normal vga console. Can be added
to /etc/modprobe.d. ?
xorg.conf can be rename to xorg.conf.example so to do not create problems in synaptic. ?
Some apps still need hal and hal-info.
xfburn need to be rebuild (some problems whit exo) but I did install
xfburn-04.3.tar.bz2 without problems and xfce4-dict.
One question: in my default system I'm still using kernel 2.6.37, what I can't
find anymore are his kernel-headers. Did they ever exist?
(brasero whit this kernel has no problem to detect external and internal cd where default kernel does not work so good- )

Brasero gave the following message on startup:

(brasero:2511): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking List() failed for type GProxyVolumeMonitorGdu: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

Nothing happend while I inserted the CD. Can't select any drive in the gui. Nothing in dmesg.

In /var/log/debug I found the following:
"Mar 7 13:46:10 (none) kernel: sr 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0"

In /var/log/messages:
"Mar 7 13:48:47 (none) kernel: sr 4:0:0:0 CDB: cdb[0]=0x0: 00 00 00 00 00 00"

When you pop in the cd, the latest line (at bottom) of dmesg or /var/log/messages is that??

brasero, work perfectly, here, on a fresh rc3a install, it has some minor bugs, but these bugs are not critical.

Not exactly. There are 3 lines inserted:

Mar 7 20:51:11 (none) kernel: sr 4:0:0:0: CDB: cdb[0]=0x0: 00 00 00 00 00 00
Mar 7 20:51:11 (none) kernel: ata5: hard resetting link
Mar 7 20:51:32 (none) last message repeated 2 times

The last one is probably there because I run "tail /var/log/messages" twice?

lsscsi returns this:
[4:0:0:0] cd/dvd MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ862AS 1.10 /dev/sr0

Most people here report no problem with cd/dvd detection. Seems like some thing broken in your installation. Have you dont fresh install right?

As far as I can tell everything went fine. Problems with the MatSHITa drive are not exactly new. I'm fighting with the drive ever since.

I know very well the frustration of having brasero not working when everybody say that is working, I had this problem during all snapshot.
You can try, for the moment to use xfburn.
Install xfburn whit deps. If does not start install again using the tar=xfburn-0.4.3.tar.bz2
To compile use autogen.sh not ./configure
In settings/Removable drivers and media uncheck all removable storage and CD.
Reboot
You will have to mount all drivers using thunar, when you want to blank a cd just don't mount.
Good luck.

It's not just Brasero that fails to detect the CD / DVD in the drive.

Tried goobox with an audio CD. Even from the command line - just nothing. But in /var/log/messages if found the following:
"Mar 9 20:43:27 (none) kernel: goobox[2063]: segfault at a0 ip 08070ba9 sp bf99b7a0 error 4 in goobox[8048000+37000]"

And in /var/log/syslog this:
"Mar 9 20:40:25 (none) kernel: ata5: softreset failed (1st FIS failed)
Mar 9 20:40:31 (none) kernel: ata5: failed to reset engine (errno=-5)
Mar 9 20:40:36 (none) kernel: ata5: softreset failed (1st FIS failed)
Mar 9 20:40:42 (none) kernel: ata5: failed to reset engine (errno=-5)
Mar 9 20:41:11 (none) kernel: ata5: softreset failed (1st FIS failed)
Mar 9 20:41:11 (none) kernel: ata5: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps
Mar 9 20:41:17 (none) kernel: ata5: failed to reset engine (errno=-5)
Mar 9 20:41:17 (none) kernel: ata5: softreset failed (device not ready)
Mar 9 20:41:17 (none) kernel: ata5: reset failed, giving up
Mar 9 20:41:17 (none) kernel: ata5.00: disabled"
According to the time stamp this happened before the goobox - means with Brasero.

Tried the "Drive Manager" (hope the translation is correct). It sees the drive, but doesn't recognize the audio CD. Tried to mount an ordinary data cd: "no medium found on /dev/sr0".

Besides all other issues I have no clue how to mount a raw / empty CD.

edit: after this exercise hibernating fails. It hangs on shutdown until I press the power switch. On resume it comes back, counts percentage of restored memory, than reboots. The result is the same no matter whether the CD is left in the tray or removed before initiating hibernation.

Any help is highly appreciated.

What I will do is this
install
hal and hal-info
xfburn, asunder and audacious to use instead of brasero and goobox.
to jump problems whit gnome libs
if there is not any change and you know your cd driver
try to take a look at your kernel config
section Device Drivers and maybe bus options (there are so many that is a nightmare)
Or install a new kernel at the same time.
Last is to try this command (the hope is that the kernel does not charge anymore the wrong module -a lottery-)

cd /lib/modules/2.6.35.11/kernel
cd drivers/message
mv i2o i2o.off

or just put all what you find in /lib/modules/2.6.35.11/kernel/drivers/message
inside a folder call 12o.off and put it back if does not work.

I hear some talks about RC3 not making it to final - but instead go back to "beta" stage, update some packages and see if we can make a better system.

OK for me.

I hope we can release before Easter.

We've been working on 7.0 since before Christmas - Phew. ::)
<smile>

It's OK for me. End result for 7.0 should be good.

Best regards,
Claus
