Zenwalk 7.0 is available for immediate download !

Still desktop, Internet and multimedia oriented, Zenwalk 7.0 is a milestone in the evolution of the distribution. This release brings several major changes at user level and system level. At user level, the XFCE desktop environment has been updated to major version 4.8.1, coming with a new VFS, XFCE 4.8 allows CIFS and SFTP shares browsing through the file manager, making it mostly feature equivalent to Gnome while still a lot faster. The new panel has good support for transparency, and is packaged with many plugins out of the box. Zenwalk 7.0 will come with XFCE 4.8.1 (stable version, many bugs have been fixed since 4.8.0).

We are pleased to announce that OpenOffice will be replaced by LibreOffice which appeared to be more reliable on Zenwalk during our testing process (stability is very important for an office software).

At system level Zenwalk 7.0 is our first release coming without HAL, which has been completely replaced by udev/GIO. The Zenwalk 7.0 kernel will be 2.6.37.4, with KMS support. KMS is disabled by default but can be enabled easily in the bootloader configuration.

As usual most packages have been updated to the latest stable version :
LibreOffice 3.3.1
XFCE 4.8.1
Icecat 3.6.15
Icedove 3.0.4
Kernel 2.6.37.4 with BFS scheduler and performance tweaks

Here you can find some information about the new XFCE 4.8 Desktop : http://www.xfce.org/about/news/?post=1295136000

We also changed a little bit the way we manage packages, you may have noticed that we no longer provide a "current" repository. We had to find a solution to make package management safe and clear for the average user : from now, for each version of Zenwalk, we will provide a versionalized repository including extra packages, where all packages are "certified compatible" with the given version (ie : 6.4, 7.0, ...). The "snapshot" repository will keep being an "experimental" work-in-progress repository, as usual.

We hope you'll like the new artwork, and will appreciate the consistency of the desktop layout, as well as the performance of Zenwalk 7.0 :)

Have fun !
JP

Hey FOLKS,

using Zenwalk since many years I have to say, thanks! Great job!
Installed Zenwalk 7.0 on my laptop and pc, and it runs like a charm.

Fast, simple, everything works, "only" 1 program for 1 task - thats how it shoud be!

No problems recognized.
A little hint for the xDSL-Modem/PPPoE users, who want to have an auto-connect each Zenwalk-startup.

After you've ran "pppoe-setup"...
insert into your /etc/rc.d/rc.local the following line:

#####
pppoe-start
#####

Now the problem is, that the GUI "Network Manager" manages all network connections and kills your PPPoE-connection to your ISP after startup.
Solution: Just disable the check in the GUI, that the "Network Manager" should control and overwrite everything after startup. Then your dsl-connection will stay alive.

Thanks to the whole Zenwalk-Team and greetings from Germany,
Matthias
