I have recently installed Zenwalk 7.0 with xfce. Can I play with Openbox somehow without having to install the OS, adding it to my present installation? As you can see, I know nothing about anything.

Some issues:

On my old Dell X wouldn`t work untill I manually deleted 'nomodeset' from lilo.conf. Why the command was there at all?

The system was unable to connect to internet. Strange... Wicd failed, netconfig failed. Manual ifconfig and dhcpcd failed.

from zenwalk 7.0 announcement
"kernel will be 2.6.37.4, with KMS support. KMS is disabled by default but can be enabled easily in the bootloader configuration."

Are there any statistics available on how more resource-efficient Openbox really is over the other environments? Has anyone measured those things before?

Unless you're really pushing the envelope on resources you are not likely to notice.
What's your system like?
I run Zenwalk Openbox 6.4 on a 120MHz laptop with 128MB of RAM. (That's not my main system)
Even Firefox is usable!

The reason I use Openbox is the number of things easily configurable.
The things I like are:
Keyboard control
Window placement
I can get rid of window decorations!
The menus open centered. (This was the first thing that attracted me to Openbox.)

Hello Stillborn,

Yesterday i replaced my old Zenwalk 6.4 and found a fast and a friendly designed Openbox 7.0.
although the Sun was shining i could not stop to tweak a little bit.
The simplest and first setting was my favorite wallpaper, no problem with your script.
Now i have a german translated rightclick menu and a topbar like i want, but i am not able to delete the botbar. The best thing what i can do, is a blank bar. I am curious if I can still handle it.
My next step would be to install the NVIDIA driver, would you recommend this? I performed this with Zenwalk 7.0 and found the system unstable ,although i have done this twice with Zenwalk 6.4.

Greatings and thank you

Michael

You can stop botbar from loading if you comment it out
Code:
# Launch fbpanel
(sleep 2 && fbpanel -p topbar) &
# (sleep 3 && fbpanel -p botbar) &
in .config/openbox/autostart.sh
and original backup can always be found under /etc/skel/.config/*

I have it installed and didn't find any problems.

Hi. Just installed ZW 7.0 Openbox, it's running really well. Thanks for a a fine distro which still runs on old hardware!

Best,

Colonel Panic.
