Hi,

Some news from the project.

As you have noticed, the project is still alive (but lacks communication, see at the end ;)).

Lately I have worked to automates most of the packaging tasks and come back to the original philosophy : Minislack (a real Slackware system optimized in size, and ready to use out of the box).

Everything is up to date and working in current, and : as soon as Pat will give birth again, we will release a brand new ISO.

The main recent changes at user level is Chromium becoming the web browser, serving as well as image gallery viewer and very fast pdf viewer (as soon as Firefox provides some descent video/flash support ... let's see what we do...). The current release is 100% backward compatible with Slackware and is also using a few packages from trusted and serious sources like Alien Bob and Slackonly.

I believe that the web browser is the most important application, and that desktops have to be able to be synced with smartphones.

Netpkg can simultaneously query as many repositories as needed, providing the distribution with thousand packages coming from Slackware, me and Ejis, from Alienbob, Slackonly, .... : a "Debian-like choice of packages" !! (Ejis also provides a complete set of Music/Recording tools with real time kernel, making Zenwalk a recording Studio out of the box).

Still "a smaller than 1Gb" 64 bits distribution : Zenwalk boots very fast, provides 1 application per task : it flies on my wife's and son's 10 years old 2GB AMD Athlon 64 (of course it's even more spectacular on my X6 hexacore 3.2GHz - 8GB - 2T SSD AMD Phenom :p).

So ... all in all, we just need someone to handle communication : create a new forum (this old one will remain online read only) and also a simple "Slackish" presentation web page (and everything he/she will want to do... :D)

Tell me ...
Cheers
JP

Would be good if i upgrade from Zenwalk repo CURRENT upgrade with slack.zenwalk.org mirror upgrade too?
Much difficult to install from fresh, dont recall all the custom changes done to some config files.

Jp,
Slightly confused. If you propose to upgrade from current version to this new without ISO installation. Which repo? Just the zenwalk mirror helps?
When i did netpkg list on this repo, i did not see much changes to many packages.

So i wonder, apart from updated Chrome, whats new with the new version of zenwalk?

I upgraded all the packages except ffmpeg, libreoffice, kernel, mplayer.
The new mozilla-Firefox along with Flashplayer11.2.202.540 (alien) is broken. Though i checked all the libflashplayer.so files links in /usr/xxx directories, still firefox is blocking the flash. The add-on page says other wise. something fishy.

Assuming that we're still working in the direction of a Zenwalk 8 (8^2 = 64 bit), I look forward to experiencing the renewed Zenwalk when it's ready - and I think it's a good idea to reboot the project (back to its roots) with increased co-operation with Slackware, given the limited workmanship available. Happy hacking. X!!

P.S. I rarely check in these days. Next time will probably be around Christmas, so if you need my attention, feel free to write an email.
