I had a problem like that before. Around the same time I had a ram card that popped out of its slot. I can't remember if that was the cause. Maybe the wrong driver was installed. I can't remember.

Just on the off chance that my copy of the live CD was bad I downloaded it again.

Same result. It loads up, allows me to login and reboots if I try to do anything.

The problem may be with xorg but I can't get into terminal mode to try anything.

Please try the following, boot ZenLive and press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get into a console.  At login prompt enter root as user and ZenLive as password.

Once logged type the following command to get mouse support on the console:
Code:
sh /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm start

Now try moving the mouse and clicking on the screen, does it reboot?

No, it says there is no such file.

As a side issue, the colors are killing me. Grey on blue is nearly invisible, especially on the microscopic font used.

Add another distro that works "out of the box".

It's Wolvix, another slack-based distro. Maybe the developers here should take a look at it to see why Zenwalk has so many problems.

The video card is a Voodoo 3 with 16384k RAM

How can I get to the file?

Never mind, I found it.

Too much to retype but it recognises my VIA chipset and the Voodoo 3 card.

Is there anything specific you need?

Version 4.4.1 works like a charm.
