You can always download Firefox, extract where you like and run from there.
So you can see that is not big difference.
This are the snapshots builds if you like to have fun
http://nightly.mozilla.org/js-preview.html
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/
http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snap ... rel-linux/
same as before extract and enjoy (bin=Firefox-opera--chrome- wrapper)
If you run lilo in expert mode next time will be easy to choose what you want.
Zenwalk is one of the distro that let you log as root. You can learn Linux in a
more easy way but is not wihtout risk. Is your system and enjoy the way you want.
Happy that you solved you connection problem.

thanks for the info about firefox, but i think i'll keep ICEcat if it has the same plugins as firefox and localizations :)

OK i know i can login in root but how to autologin?

I know it's always said as a bad idea, dangerous,ecc... but this time i need to have easy access to my (old) machine like i did with windows: i have always used the admin account in windows without real problems. I need to test, move, modify, delete, install freely and i don't care, at this stage, to what happens to my machine as it is the old one.

So, are you able to tell me the steps to autologin in root account? (no required username nor password at login, just go straight to GUI)

PS. franco sei italiano?

hmm, if i go to control panel -> login screen (is it gdmsetup?) i have the possibility to autologin but root autologin is forbidden, i suppose for the safety of the user, but in this case i have nothing to loose and want to go straight to GUI with full control

stillborn, tell me the steps if the procedure i followed with Login screen is wrong
what is this gdmsetup? sorry i'm a complete noob

gdmsetup and login window (/usr/sbin/gdmsetup)are the same thing.
I don't know how to make you login direct as root. Maybe you can find some configuration file in /etc/pam.d
Example in etc/pam.d/system-auth if you comment out the last line
( #session optional pam_lastlog.so)
you boot as user direct in x once is enable autologin.
As is not a problem, just your will, figure it out by yourself.

Windows, quindi tu ne devi sapere piu' di me. Non lasciarti ingannare dai piccoli delfini. Skywatcher e' un altro it. e lui si puo' aiutarti.
Buon divertimento.

I think Franco has a point there, but it did make me curious. I did some googling and found this, it applies to Ubuntu, but the principle is the same and has some interesting remarks, at the end is a link how to configure GDM:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/how-to-enable-auto-login-as-a-root-798323/

PS. If you want lilo to be more verbose, add the -v option. You can read the man pages for more options.

1) i've tried following the 2 methods in that post but noone worked, still having the login window asking pass and user.

Any other suggestions?

2)I have another question: i downloaded some txz and tgz packages from the repository and want to install them on Zenwalk, however when i right-click on them and select install it says
No package to process

i know i can use the netpackage manager but it is a bit slow and not so easy to use so i've downloaded the same packages by myself. i've searched a bit on the net but couldn't find an answer about Zenwalk

3) the applications are avaliable for all the users?
4) does the installation process create a desktop link? if not, how can i create desktop links?
(sorry if my mind is windows-oriented but that's the best way i can explain it :)

Franco grazie dei suggerimenti ma fino a che non riesco ad autologgarmi nemmeno nella console sono bloccato. Magari Skywatcher può aiutarmi, dici che posso contattarlo via PM?

Hi,
If you want to create a desktop icon, go to /usr/bin/application-you-want, right-click and choose 'send to desktop'. Personally I'd rather have the icons in the panel though.
Still don't see why if you can't automatically login as root, if you just login as root yourself at the login-screen, you needn't be stuck to the terminal. It only takes a few seconds to type 'root' and your password, doesn't it?
Other questions I don't know, I use the package-manager if the program I want is available there. Still quicker than downloading and installing by hand, for me it is. I have installed .txz , using installpkg. As root in terminal:
installpkg path/to/packagename.txz
Other programs had a readme file what said what to do, or instructions at the website where I downloaded from, including what dependencies you'd need.

If you want to contact skywatcher I think you can.(but nobody give private lessons)
The best is to go to
http://www.zenwalk.it
and post your problem there. He is there.
I don't know what's gone on whit your system.
For some reason you don't have permission to install that pkg
There are 3 pkg-manager in zenwalk
netpkg whit his gui xnetpkg
Zendo
gslapt
If your connection is slow try Zendo.
Now in Linux there are few pkg that run by themselves. They need other libs, so call deps (dependencies), if it was just to install a pkg we will not need a pkg-manager.
You can install by yourself any pkg but you have to take care also of the deps. That's why they are so comfortable.
Try Zendo, download whit xnetpkg (include dependencies)
All this pkg-m you have to run as root.
So if you are login as root OK if you are login as a normal user come out a notification asking for the root password. (in Zenwalk is asked only once, during your season)
The install does not create a luncher, you will find in menu.
If you want a luncher -Windows way- just right click on the desktop "create luncher" and write the ap that you want.
If you want to use the panel-right click-add new items.
To log in your system just write
root -hit enter
password -hit enter (the root password)
When you find how to auto login as root will be not more necessary (in the mean time!)
Better log as normal user
System/Login window-root password-security-enable automatic login-write your name. But you know all this.
to log in xterminal as root
su
password

ok i think i'll give up the autologin as root as it seems someone takes care of my security too much and has disabled this possibility. Funny that on Linux, the world of freedom, i can't just do what i want.
(that's not criticism towards Zenwalk itself, one of the best distro out there 8) )

thanks again for the infos and prepare for another question and one problem:

1) can i add a button to the taskbar, that minimizes all windows and goes to desktop?

2) if i use hibernation (copy ram to hard disk) when i go back it takes a lot and the system is unusable, the desktop appears but it seems freezed. what can i do?

you know, i'm used to Windows which takes really some seconds to go back to work (that's the only thing in which it wins for now). I need only a few things to run properly on Zenwalk and then just throw windows in the £&°°#!

Hi,
If you right-click on the panel, you can 'add new items', somewhere there is the item 'show desktop - hide all items and show the desktop'. I think it is what you mean, and I indeed think it is added by default. But perhaps you lost it somewhere?.
I know it takes some time to adjust if you've been using Windows (the taskbar is called panel) , I have a program for which there is no Linux-replacement, so I had to return to Windows every time, but now I have it working under Wine, and no more Windows! So it just takes some time before you have everything sorted out.
As for your other question, sorry, I don't know.

Hi guys, i'm still here!
Thanks again for all the suggestions.
I have had little time to test Zenwalk and yesterday installed some app with netpkg. I switched off and when i rebooted today the "start" orange dolphin icon in the 1st panel (taskbar) was disappeared and also some icons in the menu or control panel.

What's happened? I just installed some apps like wine, amsn, amule but no new app regarding graphical interface D!!

Hi,
Hmmm, I remember having the dolphin disappear, I think it was after in my ignorance I installed something from snapshot while I am on current. First I downgraded everything again, and then from the panel, 'add new item' I added the XFCE-menu and changed the icon back to the dolphin. But your problem might be something entirely different.... I've got wine, no problems, don't know about amule and amsn.

Good luck, Blackbird
