hmm what's the difference between current or snapshot (i know the meaning)?

i cannot even uninstall the packages because the netpkg application starts but closes immediately before even showing the window

From the Zenwalk Manual http://manual.zenwalk.org/en/Package%20Management.html
Quote:
There are 3 types of mirrors available: Current, Snapshop and Restricted.

1. Current: select any of available Current mirrors if you wish to install stable packages and security fixes
2. Snapshot : choose any of snapshot mirrors if you want to try out a cutting edge programs. The repository will contain the packages included in the development Zenwalk version
3. Restricted: Some packages are located under a restricted mirror due to patent/legal reasons, like lame.

If you have installed packages from a snapshot mirror you have some choices:
1. Reinstall from CD (Easy but goes back too far.)
2. Select a current mirror and downgrade packages.
3. Stay with the snapshot mirror and upgrade your whole system.

If you select option 2. you will have to use the command line version of netpkg.
Code:
netpkg mirror
Select a mirror ending with current.
Code:
netpkg D
will give you a list of packages to downgrade
Code:
netpkg packagename1 packagename2 ...
to process the packages.
Code:
man netpkg
for more information on using netpkg.

If you select option 3. you should have a look at this topic.

current repository is the stable (current release)
snapshot repository is the unstable (development release)
You should stay in current.
If you want to try now what will be the future (next)release of Zenwalk you can try but this kind of crashes
are the pay off of curiosity.
Install again the toy and stay in current. I mean update
current and install new pkg using a current repository.
There is 3 pkg manager in Zenwalk that you can use.
Default is netpkg whit his gui.
Zendo is nice to have as works a little better whit slow connections, try it as don't let you forget new dot (new configurations)
In the wiki-how-to you have many things to read.
One day I will have to learn how to use Windows and I will ask you for help.
Ma non c'e' nessuno in Zenwalk.it?
Sorry aurlaent, I was writing an answer, you faster then me.

I reinstalled Zenwalk again and now installed the packages from current mirrors.
i have set up some things for my needs and all seem to work. I have set autologin with my user (not root), but when the pc starts there's a small window on a black background that says "last access -date- CEST 2010 su :0"

where -date- is the last time i accesses my account. i have to click ok and this is boring.
How can i stop this window from coming out every time i start? it makes the autologin useless as i have to click something to start.

thanks for replies franco and aurlaent ;)

franco, la sezione italiana è un pò spoglia (è normale) quindi preferisco chiedere qui

apart from this problem, zen runs quite fast and i'm satisfied with it!

Problem solved, thanks franco!

1) i'd like to associate the hibernate function to the hibernation/suspend button on my keyboard (on top in the centre, there's a moon on it)
i tried going to the energy manager of XFCE but the "when you press the sleep button" function seems not to work

2) and also associate the same command to an icon i will put on the desktop

how can i do these things?

No idea.
You can try to add to settings/keyboard/Appli shortcuts
usr/sbin/hibernate

:( hmm ok, maybe i can find a workaround. First i need to now the shortcut/file/path/command that puts the machine in hibernation. i suppose there's a file, related to XFCE startmenu that stores every application entry with the related path and maybe there are also the commands related to the switchoff/logoff/hibernate/... so i can discover the command for hibernation

the question is: where is this file in Zenwalk? what is its name?

then there's still the problem to assign it to the sleep button on my keyboard, but it's less important

There is a /usr/sbin/hibernate
Open whit a text editor and read it
Maybe is less fatigue to click quit and hibernate.
I let whit your game in the hope that somebody more experienced can help.
Ciao

i opened the hibernation file in usr/sbin and there are entries related to video card, ecc... but could not find the command that hibernates the computer

i wasn't even able to find the (if it exists) file related to XFCE start menu.
tried searching a menu.xml file but the search gives me fatal error :-\ ::)

Any other helpful person?

Zenwalk uses pm-utils.
Try /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate

hey, you aare right, that's the file!... but my computer seems not to like hibernation and, when restored, sometimes gets stuck and nomore desktop ???

So, if i can't hibernate at least i'd like to know the shortcut to shutdown (i need to create a desktop shortcut), what about this?

and, what about the possibility to assign this shortcut/command to a button of the keyboard?

i have to admit that on the hibernation side windows is really really another world, it takes just some seconds to restore.
Does hibernation work well in famous distros like Ubuntu? -just to know-

Hibernation is quite hardware dependent. It works fine on my compaq laptop, but I don't use it all that much.

The easiest command for shutdown is /sbin/halt

XFCE has the ability to set hotkeys. (I think it's on the keyboard tab of the window manager settings, but I'm not using XFCE at the moment.)

guarda in settings/xfce4 power manager, vi sono delle configurazioni che magari
vuoi usare. Per spegnere basta premere leggermente il power-off del computer, non avere paura, Zenwalk e' gia configurato cosi.
