Hm, the job isn't done yet - just look at the forums index :(

What I'm still missing is some word/discussion about the dramatic downfall on distrowatch -
or, in general of the downfall of zenwalk - something has to be changed obviously!

My personal analysis is :
- we are less active on development.
- we lost some usefull guys some year ago ... :(
- we have less maintainers for packages
- there are a lot of new distributions and some users want to try this. I think the big one is "linux mint".

I try to do my best but between maintain the server, maintain a lot of packages, answer on the forum, boost zenwalk by inform project that there is a zenwalk package of their soft (for example :
http://gpodder.org/downloads , http://www.bombono.org/cgi-bin/wiki/Download ... )
and have a normal live with my family ... :-\

I can't do more for the moment.

Also Slackware is falling, the important is come out whit a good distro.
There are more then 500 distros to be 40 or 20 ....or 60
When I read some reviews I can get nervous.
For me netpkg is the best pkgmanager that I know
Xnetpkg gives me problem from time to time
but all my efforts to install a Debian, as soon there is a big update,
fail. My weak connection is probably the problem. But Zenwalk works.
And I will never go around making reviews or opinions.
If a thank you is welcome
Thank you bib and all zen team

I would call it deviations - zenwalk is in free fall for some time, now at 43.

That's a result of the next two quotes.

I've noticed.

Yeah, they are 'usefull guys'.

There had been a lot of new distributions since Slackware's first introduction - some twenty years ago.
And linuxmint most likely attracts defecting ubuntu users anyway.

Zenwalk (as I see it) was once an easy-to-start-with-Slackware-Distribution
with some user friendly maintenance tools and full compatibility to it's inheritance.
But evolved slowly into a mess of incompatibility, half baken and badly documented
derivative Slackware descendant - pretending to be a better Slackware.

You are completely right.
Now imagine to enter in a cellar full of wines of all the world.
You are an expert. You go straight to your wine and you fill the room
whit your expertize pissing out certain wines and exalting other wines.
You are a newbie. You listen the talk. You read Wine spectator.
And then, of course you start testing.
One day you will be another expert or just an occasional wine drinker.
But at the end you finish, if not stupid, to drink the wine you like.
Unfortunately the wine you like depends about the day, the moment, the
friend whit whom you share.
So at the end of the road Wine Spectators, experts ...
I let you judge.
Thank you for your opinion.

Ciao :)

I don't think it's a problem with the distro itself, as I am convinced that zenwalk is one the best gnu/linux out there, faster and more stable than many others. In my humble opinion the real big problem now is the lack of people... At a certain point zenwalk was among the top 10 distros, had a great community and lots of people contributing (packages, docs, etc). Unfortunately that damn schism spoiled everything... :(
As a consequence, a lot of resources that had been created at that time and were available to the community and newcomers now just stand in ruins unmaintained (I refer to the wiki, to other sections of the main site, to the ZUR, etc.) Similarly, we really need new packagers to help maintaining/expanding/updating the repos. We do all we can, but this is often not enough... :(
I do believe it is better to remove all the unmaintained stuff than to leave it there just to be blamed, this is my view. Zenwalk is a clean and efficient distro and this is what it should look to newcomers: unmaintained stuff everywhere does not suggest this idea, unfortunately. Few people --> unmaintained stuff --> fewer people --> more unmaintained stuff --> fewer and fewer people and so on... this is what we are seeing now :(

:skw:

I agree.
But we have to not sit in the corner of our room.
Go to the window and watch the world.
We are one of the many distros in Linux world. Whit our problems, our faults and so on. Could be a momentary problem or not.
What I mean is that we should stop our mind thinking at Slackware, the best distro etc.
Think Linux as a whole.
A couple of years a go some friends ask me why I use Linux.
They tell me:
"you can have Windows and all the free software that you
want installed in Windows without the need to install Linux"
As you know Linux desktop is not growing, or not growing as we expect.
What makes Linux great is his philosophy, his ethic.
But at the same time is his weakness.
Imagine if we change this ethic to
___Free software for free systems and only and only for free systems_
What did Jobs was this. Well done but this.
No more openoffice for windows or gimp or any dvd burner or audacity
or clam and go one.Figure out what will be the expenses for somebody using Windows.
Now Windows want to change boot and will be not more possible to install Linux. The Linux answer? A petition. Go and sign how angry we are. Solution= boot from an external usb or something like that.
Excellent for a newbie. Who cares about newbies. Did you realize
that between the first 10 distros there is Arch, slack and a couple of other distros that are not exactly for beginners.
Who cares? The problem is the best distro. For whom???
We are a little world inside a little world and we discuss who is the best...
Not having to pay royalties or be blackmail maybe is a real problem.
There was already some of this problems during the divorce in Zenwalk. As you probably know Salix OS was born. They have a forum
"what you think about other OS" or something like that.
I don't think. I don't comment about other distros. I'm not a good
helper in Zenwalk. I don't blame others people fault. I take what I like and as in wines I wait for the good year.

For me the discussion end here.
