one of the hard disks in my server is an "old" wd 80gb ide drive that gets used so infrequent that i want it to spin down after a certain amount of idle time. so i set



unfortunately this doesn't have any effect on the particular hdd, while with the other drives it is working fine.

now if i do



the drive spins down immediately entering standbye mode (hdparm -C tells me so), so this mode IS supported.

does anyone know how i can "force" the timed shutdown, or any workaround?

Hey,

It looks like only some drives support this feature. "Enable/disable  the power-on in standby feature, if supported by the drive." Also, it says that you might be able to do a jumper setting to change this -- but if a manual standby works I'm not sure. Maybe the harddrive needs to detect the inactivity for the standby, and it is different from a forced standby? Maybe there it is actually being accessed, where is it mounted (or does it have a swap?)? If you hardly ever use the drive, do you need it? Perhaps the data could be put elsewhere.
