Hi there,

So far I am already 2 years a great fan of Zenwalk and I have used Zenserver for my server. Unfortunately, it is not really that much supported anymore. Since I am so familiar and used to Slackware based distro's I thought maybe Zenwalk Core could be used as a server distro. So the question is: Can I? Or should I use ZenServer and point it to the current repo of Zenwalk to assure the latest updates?
I have tried SME server (CentOS based) now but I don't really like it, since it is not ZW :-)

Zenwalk Core should work just fine for a server, of course you will need to add the Apache/PHP/whatever you want, since Core won't come with those installed by default. In fact, with a little work Core could be even better than Zenserver for your server, since you will be able to completely dictate what gets installed, and thus arrive at a very stable and minimal installation perfect for your needs.

Thanks,

I will download Core (i'll wait for 5.0 final). You mentioned a 'little work', hmm, what do you mean by that? Any other work than finding the needed packages? I hope I don't have to do a lot of configuration, so far 99% of all settings I have never changed, not in ZW en not in ZS.
I have no plans for installing xorg or any graphical applications.
BTW: how bad is the idea of installing zenserver and pointing netpkg to the current repo of ZW? Or should I copy some config files from zenserver to make sure that my programs on the new server work like they did on the old ZenServer? (It is a different pc, have not touched the harddrive yet)

Regards, Ron

By "a little work", I just mean downloading the right packages. You'd probably be better off just downloading Zenwalk Core and installking whatever packages you want. The configuration files should be fine, and you probably won't have to configure anything differently than you did using Zenserver. I'd recommend against just copying your old conf files over though, since newer packages may have changed things up a bit.

Hi,

Do I need to add anything ? :)

Well, I can add that I have been using ZW Core as a server for years now ...and that's even why I became the maintainer :)
Sparky pointed you to the right direction : install, netpkg thep ackages you need, copy your config files, launch.
That should do the trick.

Of course you will lose ZSAdmin functionnality, and that's something we could think about. You could use webmin, but well ... not really the same.

Tell us which app you use on your server and I'm sure we could be of help in case there was a problem.

Tnx,

On my server I will be using Lighttpd for a webserver, postfix for email handling, Clamav and spamassassin if possible. Furthermore I would like remote login with ssh and ftp.
After installation of Core I guess a simple 'netpkg lighttpd postfix ssh sftp clamav spamassassin' would install all needed stuff right?
Maybe webmin until a good tool like zsadmin is available.

Hi,

For ftp you can use pure-ftpd. I don' see lighttpd still present on the repos. Maybe it has been packaged before but not updated ?
I already use the other on production machines, so no problemo :)

Regards.

Recently somebody requested lighttpd in the package requests, but it was not done. So I would say that it is definitely not in the repos.

Hi,

Teran had built it in ZenServer, so it should not be very difficult to update from his buildscript.

Hi,

Core 5.0 is now beta for about 3 months. Please advise me: 5.0beta or 4.8?

Core 5.2 :)
If you can wait a little bit more ... (typically from a few days to a few weeks).
Otherwise you can go with 5.0. I did not have a lot of feedback but I have personnaly setup some servers with it and they run without any problem.

Hey Son|c,

You'd prefer that I wait for 5.2 (beta?, rc?) and be a tester for you? I can wait if it helps you.

Downloaded 5.2

I will install as soon as possible. Which program can I use (from repository if possible) for webmail? So I can access email (that icedove has not yet downloaded) from anywhere over the world.

squirrelmail is great, it's not packaged (yet) but doesn' really need too because really easy to install
http://www.squirrelmail.org/
Requires (ofcourse): a running apache+php and a IMAP v4 server (dovecot is in extra ;))
