hi all, and 1000,000 big thank yous for all the people who support this project :) :) :)

this is only the beginning, but i started to write a guide to extra packages on the zenwalk repos. i noticed that there are not clear catalogues of what we have on the repo apart from the names of the extra applications. so i thought why not making a book about extra applications in the repos with screenshots and all that. what i want to try with this is to write some guides to something that are not part of the zenwalk manual (but maybe on the wiki).

Zenwalk Companion Wiki (enjoy the new look PLUS mini reviews)
http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php?title ... _Companion

help required
* screenshots, especially from kde and gnome applications

i am open to suggestions. you can send me PM or just write down on this thread. thanks

best wishes

tsuren

i agree. absolutely fantastic idea. do you plan to keep this in pdf-format? cause when you would do this as webpage you could include links to bigger screenshots from the main document. perhaps we could integrate this into the wiki. also i would suggest to only take that part of the screen which actually contains the application and not the whole desktop.

I also like the idea! It would be great to have it as part of the wiki or on a standalone site like apps.zenwalk.org. Packager could add a screenshot and a small text by themselves to keep it up to date.

Excellent idea! Looking through the extra packages you are kind of on your own to figure out what each package is used for. Granted, you can google this stuff, but a proper zenwalk users guide to the extra packages is a big help. Perhaps you could also include the user contributed packages here:
http://users.zenwalk.org/user-accounts/ but that might be a big job. Perhaps each packager could contribute to it.
There should be a link to this on the wiki, or in the manual, or somewhere.

another reason to integrate it into the wiki might be, that we already have the games-section there, which actually contains the same information (descriptions & screenshots).

i agree, it is good to port this to wiki. i will do that in future. but at the moment, i need to construct the "backbone" first on the pdf to set the format and all that thing (because doing that on the web/wiki is very tiresome work). At the moment, because i am writing this with latex, it is easier for me to alter the styles...

as i wrote above, i want to update the companion weekly. at the moment, i am including only applications, and it would be helpful if packagers send me message with a short description and screenshots (or just include that in FIFO section). but i know that means a little more work for packagers, and i fear that might prevent people from submitting more packages (because simply they cannot be bothered or tired). it would be nice if the packagers could put (ap) before their posting in the FIFO section (or even in the testings section; some packagers have already started put 'game', and that really helps), like:

(ap) gFCE ultra

and once this gets
[Done] (ap) gFCE ultra

then at this point, i can put them in the weekly, first (for mailing perhaps), and then to the companion. Once i finish the pdf version, i will port it to the wiki. by then, i think all the format has been set and perhaps easier to maintain.

i am not very good at explaining things today. so let me know if i didn't clarify things properly. :)

best wisehs

P.S. applications from user support directory is something i am thinking of doing, BUT at the moment, i think the proper procedure is go via testing then the repo. so unless someone contact me to put some application from thier user directory, i will nto put in the companion. (except for Beryl/compiz and all that perhaps, i think, because  i know that they are eye-candies.)

all the comments about screens shots and all that taken. so near the end, i will change these photos. i just didn't have time to manipulate every screenshots. ;)

Very nice idea! I have thought about making an Applications section in the wiki myself as we did with the Games section, but the applications are just too many and I don't have the time right now.

Nice work with the pdf!  :)

about the screenshots: i think this really could be work to be done by the packagers. it only needs one screenshot, and it's not difficult to create one anyway.

Right click on your xfce panel, select Add and there's a screenshot applet right there.  ;)

thanks hennes!! i will put them.

yeah, if it is no big trouble for the packagers to provide screenshots then... could that be made a requirement for FIFO for submitting applications?

:)
