Zenwalk Companion is an absolutely fantastic idea.

It'll certainly help people looking for a guide to what's available in extra.

I like the idea of packagers including the screenshots in FIFO too, that'll definately make it a lot easier to simply add them to the companion. I really hope you do well with this idea.

Keep up the good work!

.:UPDATE:.

i updated "zenwalk companion". now i put all the packages in the /extra/xap direactory (a lot of them with screenshots but still some screen shots are missing).  i included a list showing windows equivalents in linux (but i am not at all near completion). i also have some troubles with some of the packages - i don't know what their functions are... these one are put in the miscellaneous section. if you have better ideas of categorising these unsorted ones (and even the ones i've sorted already, but if you feel not appropriate); then let me know.

so at the moment, i need help in these areas.
* win-linux equivalents (like MS word - Open office, etc etc)
* screenshots
* categorising the packages of unknown functions.

i am open to any suggestions.

i will also split up chapters, as now the size of the pdf is just over 5mb.

best wishes

It seems this project would prove very useful and definitely worth pursuing. In that light, do you reckon it would be a good idea to make this the official extras guide and probably move this into the documentation category?

at the moment, it is not official, and it is perhaps not so good to make this official, because i would like to put some "experimental" stuffs like setting up beryl and stuff. if the book is "official", i don't think i am allowed to put something that may or may not work on users' computers. so at the moment, i want this to be a community driven guidebook. i will add sections on installation and stuffs next.

i updated the companion. see the top of this thread for updates and so on.
and
thanks for the people who sent me screen shots and stuff. very helpful. if someone has screenshots of KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment (i think i can find this one in the forum), could you send them to me? i can put them in the companion. In fact, a concise instructions to install these would also be helpful, as i cannot keep installing new desktops and uninstalling them all the time. i installed GNOME but that changed somethings on xfce, i had to remove it to get back the "original feel".

thanks again for the people who support this project

best wishes

tsuren

I see you have added my beloved tasks, dates and contacts. I think it would be more fitting to have them all in the same section, not split over "System tools and Utilities" and "Miscellaneous",  as they are suite called "Pimlico". Dont you think that they are more fitting in the "Office" section? I regard PIMS (Personal Information Manager) as part of my office tools...
Thank you tsuren!  \!D/

I guess the best location is where they will end up in the menu...

zenwalk companion updated (see the top of the thread, you will find a new link)

now included Multilingual support. Perhaps you will find many spelling errors and perhaps many sentences don't really make sense at all... i had to finish this very quickly after losing my 5 hours of work.. ah evil shift and delete. i will never do that combination again..

good night tsuren

Fantastic job!

Suggestion: What about having an index at the beginning, featuring all the chapters (an particularly all the name of the application) with a link to the corresponding chapter? Could be useful if you are looking for something specific.
