You can also use Find of course. The trick is to fork it right, so that you're not overwhelmed by the ongoing action.

Sure, it's doable, but let me remind you I'm lazy :-) As I said, I would prefer sth "just working", w/o the need to tweak it.

It this is a dataset, why not use a database instead?

By "dataset" I meant a collection of data, source code files mostly. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

I'm not good with scripting in bash, but people do amazing things with the simple tools of find, locate, grep etc. We just have to learn how to use them.

Yes, I have written some helpful scripts myself, I don't mind they're slow, because I don't use them very often. But bash is not a silver bullet (is there one?) - for some purposes bash scripts are not the right tools. Of course, dbs are the natural way to do it, but I was thinking about a more generic solution - instead of putting the data into a huge db I would have db just for the index - the way Google Desktop Search, Beagle etc. work.

Apart from working w/ sb else's code I don't use findutils, all I need is ls and tab-completion :-) I know where fstab is, rc.conf etc. And vim has a nice search so I'm covered here too.

Seems like you want some kind of indexer. Takes a lot of space (usually) but they exist.
And yes, I think bash can be the silver bullet. Watching skilled people put out scripts really looks amazing! I bought the Bash Bible for that reason. Haven't gotten around to reading it yet though, see "laziness" :)

I'm quite happy w/ Beagle but I'm looking for sth simpler, no GUI. Although I have a 40GB HD it's mostly empty, so I don't mind trading space for execution time.

I have two computers and the faster is P4 2GHz, so until I get i7 Core / duo-XeonQuad I'm not going to be using bash for *everything*. That said, Bash 4 looks nice and tasty :-)

As you may have noticed we kinda hijacked this thread. How about wrapping it up?

I'm going to translate Zenwalk User Manual in to Turkish. It's about 35% now. I'll add it here when it's finished.
