Thank you. I tried it but... is there something better than nautilus?
Cons:
- arbitrarily changes the background screen and must relog to get mine
- after the first "read" of the camera there is no way to access it again
Pros:
none

Normally, nautilus detect the 'camera' in 'ptp' mode.

You have more option for starting nautilus in /usr/share/applications:

nautilus-autorun-software.desktop
nautilus-computer.desktop
nautilus-folder-handler.desktop
nautilus.desktop
nautilus-browser.desktop
nautilus-file-management-properties.desktop
nautilus-home.desktop
network-scheme.desktop

i don't have better solution, for the moment

try to load gnome services on xfce start session option.

Hi,
I gave up on directly connecting the camera's, I use a card-reader, the copying of the images goes much faster this way. And, I see now, the cameras aren't recognized any more. I'm sure my compact camera was in the past, never tried to connect the SLR (Canon) before. The only thing is I'm afraid one day I'll go off on a trip with the photo-card still stuck in the computer....

:D
I use the card too but dont have the card reader and as long as I can dont want to buy it.
I googled for a while and found gtkam (http://www.gphoto.org/proj/gtkam/)
It has a strange behaviour but once you become familiar with it does the job honestly and in a fast way

I'll give gtkam a try tomorrow, quite curious! I have now a desktop computer with built in card-reader so I never bothered to get the camera's to connect any more, specially after I saw the difference in speed, I sometimes take a lot of photographs..... I do think it is useful though because of the "forget to put the card back in the camera' issue ;D
Thanks for the tip!

Well, I don't know what the problem was, but the camera just wouldn't connect. Didn't show up with lsusb. It kept saying 'connecting' and nothing happened, the camera just fell asleep. Until this morning I tried again, switched it on and of about ten times, suddenly it said "connected' and showed up in Thunar . This is my Panasonic compact camera, the big Canon shows up with lsusb, but not with Thunar or f-spot, but that is already more than I had yesterday. Gtkam (on other computer) has found the Canon, but gives an error message:
Code:
canon_usb_get_dirents: canon_usb_long_dialogue failed to fetch direntries, returned -114

But perhaps I'm pushing the wrong buttons, haven't got a manual on how to connect the camera to the pc, I'll do some searching.... X!!

Things never cease to amaze me.... after a restart gtkam started to communicate with the Canon, and as I hadn't read the manual I clicked something wrong and the camera started taking pictures, all on it's own, using the flash, also... :o
I haven't managed to copy any pictures though, and now gtkam crashes when I open the pictures folder. I also tried digikam, also crash, f-spot couldn't find the camera, so perhaps now I remember why I always used a card-reader.
But thanks for the tips, maybe I'll go on amusing myself with this problem, or just go back to the old way.... At least the Panasonic works!

try to mount manualy, your camera, one exemple with my camera:

in one xterm, run this command:

gphoto2 --auto-detect

(result of this command for my hp 707 camera)

HP PhotoSmart 707 (PTP mode) usb:006,004

after, run this command:

gvfs-mount "gphoto2://[usb:006,004]/"

and run the command:

gthumb

I found an interesting article here:
http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/137104
It applies for Canon and Nikon, its about using the pc as remote control of the camera using gPhoto. Now I know why the camera started taking pictures when I was fiddling with gtkam. So there is more to gtkam-gphoto than just importing pictures! My camera also has two settings for connecting, ptp and pc, like in the article, don't know about Nikon.
