Does anybody know a prototyping software that could simulate a desktop application functionality? Unfortunately, Glade is just a GUI designer. I need something that combines Glade with the possibility to simulate the GUI functionality. I started my search from Wikipedia, but I found only expensive software. I'm curious to know what are you using for these kind of tasks.

gambas is pretty good for prototyping but the current package is 1.x (qt only), gambas-2.0 should also support gtk.

Not released due to a profound lack of interest (except from me that is):

;D ;D :-X  :-X

The ease of building apps as in Visual Basic, but:
- oss
- far fewer bugs to work around

I installed Gambas 1.9.91 and I'm playing with it since oskar mentioned it  \D/ ... It is a very nice tool, indeed. But for the problem I'm trying to resolve, I'm afraid this way is "too technical". I'm searching for a tool that will be used by the persons that have no time and interests to learn a programming language and to write code. Their job is to establish with the customers the GUI and the workflow and then to send the result to the programmers that are working in C++. Anyway, I like Gambas and I'll use it to create small tools for me.

My one grief with gambas is that the documentation is either the on-line stuff, or the examples. I've been a long-time prisoner of Visual Basic, and still have troubles adapting.

I have one of the gambas-books: 'A beginner's Guide to Gambas', but i'm not extatic about it: it's entirely focused upo Gambas-1, and upon explaining what all those funny 'components' do. The part about oo-programming in Gambas seems to entirely miss Gambas itself.

But i do think Gambas is one of the more promising languages for 'quick & dirty' and/or non-time-critical programming in Linux: it really bings howe the 'draw & code'  approach to make GUI programs work. And make no mistake: despite it's apparent simplicity, i've seen what that approach can achieve... As far as i've been able to see, the thing is a bit quirky if you attempt to make a non-gui oo-programme. Let me say it this way: i think it would be a wonderfull language for generating ZenWalk-sysadmin-tools.
