OK Zenwalk developers, time to focus on the WiFi issue.

Following Knappen's mention of MintLinux Casandra with XFCE, I burnt a CD of the distro this evening. Came back in to find Windows misbehaving as usual - doing something I couldn't understand or kill, so stopped it, brutally. Restarted laptop with the MintLinux CD. A live Linux system was loaded and I spent 30 seconds getting the wireless network up and running. I am sending this via the WiFi connection - wicd software package.

VERY impressed. I will flatten OpenSuse to install it. Could be good to burn a copy and reverse engineer the WiFi setup - Hoping for great things from Zenwalk.

Oh and I note that the harddisc is not spinning, something I never find with Zenwalk - or Suse come that.

Oliverjames.

Thanks for the suggestion. The installation was a breeze. Was able to move 2 partitions to a usb drive while listening to favourite internet radio (real player comes installed). I have set up my Logitech usb keyboard with full functionality. The standby / suspend function works. the network manager makes available whatever wired or cable connection it sees. My account settings from Zenwalk were imported. I have the necessary permissions (fstab) to read and write to my mail directory on the Win data partition. You're right that boot takes a little longer but once up the system reacts very quickly. Grub installed nicely and picked up my Win and Zenwalk partitions.

There must be a downside but haven't found it yet. And my laptop is running oh so quietly.

Yes, that is another great thing. Codecs for mp3, watching DVDs etc are already included.

Hopefully Zenwalk will improve on wireless soon. Not all people have time to spend hours just to get connected.
