Hi,

I finally found time to investigate the problem I have with my laptop since I tried to upgrade to 4.4.
It's a many years old samsung v20 with i810 (82845G) integrated chipset on which I never had any problem with ZW since 2.6.

On my first tests with 4.4 (Xorg 7.1) I experienced some crashes when X started : boot to init 3 ok, startx and then nothing but a blank screen and my pc was down (not pingable from another box ...). I've tried to invetigate but was not able to get any log (Xorg.0.log was desperately empty ...).

After an upgrade to Xorg 7.2, I'm now able to see logs as X does not crash my box anymore. Instead it just does not load and stops with :

Code:
(EE) I810(0): unknown type(0xffffffff)=0xff
(EE) I810(0): VBE initialization failed.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

In my Xorg.0.log I also have :
Code:
...
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
(II) Reloading /usr/lib/X11/modules//libint10.so
(II) I810(0): initializing int10

(II) I810(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000

(II) UnloadModule: "vbe"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/X11/modules//libvbe.so
(II) UnloadModule: "int10"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/X11/modules//libint10.so
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

As per some solutions on Google, I tried 1 or 2 things to get rid of this but to no avail, including recompiling the kernel with VM86 support (http://therowes.net/~greg/2006/10/16/ah ... my-sd11g5/ or http://abhidg.wordpress.com/2007/01/25/i915-problems/).

So I'm stuck with my laptop not being able to boot to my desktop ...

Thanks for your help.

Emmanuel

I think your problem is in xorg.conf. You didn't say how much graphics memory you have, but maybe the DefaultDepth is too high for your card? I would drop it to 16, then try 24 if that works. Also, you may need to look at the resolutions you are trying to run at.

Hi,

Thx for your reply but I doubt it ...
I've been using the same conf since ZW 2.6 with no prob. And I always use DefaultDepth 16, 1024x768 res.
Everything was working that way til early pkgs of Xorg 7.1.1 (as of ZW 4.2).

I'm happy to see that someone got the same f****** problem as me.
;D

More seriously, mine has appeared with the kernel 2.6.20.2, all was right before, and downgraded the kernel solved my trouble.
My graphic chipset is Intel 950 GMA.

I did it twice to be sure that it is kernel related:
fresh install > upgrade to snapshot without the kernel [ok] > upgrade the kernel  :(

The system is ok, but X can't be run

My bus ID card is : PCI 00:02:00
Found by videoconfig, xorg is well setup.
But, take a look:

I didn't find something interesting to solve it for now.

Your links were interesting, and all I have found make me make a request to JP ;) :
http://support.zenwalk.org/index.php/topic,6952.0.html

But you said that you have troubles before the kernel 2.6.20.2, so, do like me, try to find the difference between the 2 kernel config file (the 2.6 ISO is always on the repo ;) ).

Good not to be alone isn't it ? ;)

But did the recompilation of the kernel with VM86 option on solve your prob ? For me it did not ....

Son|c: Have you seen this: http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/82845 ... ics_Device ?
That took care of the problem for me.

I must say, now that I've finally gotten this to work, I'm really impressed by Zenwalk.  :)

Does anybody can confirm what version of zenwalk that used on this wiki page http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/82845 ... ics_Device ? Because i use the newest version (6.0) but it doesn't work. I still can't make my X up and running. Is it the video driver or kernel problem? Should i recompile my kernel?

Help would be appreciate. Thanks.
