SOLVED!

Distro version entered incorrectly or not supported. Use --listpkg to identify valid distro versions.

I've been following the instructions here: http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php?title ... stallation

I viewed the valid versions with --listpkg and the only thing it reports under 'Slackware' is, "Slackware/Slackware". Should I just try that instead of "Slackware/All" listed in the guide?

I haven't tried the troubleshooting section yet because it appears to be related to symbol errors, and I'm not getting any errors like that.

Well, looks like it might be awhile before I get assistance on this, so I went ahead and ran the install with the 'Slackware/Slackware' parameter.

It seemed to install ok, I guess. I can now run the user mode control panel, but of course I need the root panel to make some of the changes.

When running 'amdcccle' from root (as the menu launcher does not work), I get the following error:
Quote:
Qt: Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)

Fglrxinfo command returns:
Quote:

Major opcode of failed request: 137 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)

I guess I'll try the kernel modifcation mentioned in the wiki and report back.

The guide seems to be quite outdated. Normally after you install the kernel sources you can just run
Code:
sh ./ati-driver-installer-<whatever>
and just keep hitting enter until you are done.

I'm not sure if it is still needed with the latest drivers but in older version you also had to add this line
Code:
tmpfs      /dev/shm   tmpfs      defaults   0 0
to your /etc/fstab.

Code:
Section "DRI"
     Mode 0666
EndSection
is added to your xorg.conf automatically I believe.

Maybe you could post the output of glxinfo as well.

Ok, thanks for your help. It's further along now, but still getting errors.

Running the script per your suggestion actually gave me a GUI installer, whereas before, it did not. I also added the line to fstab, and checked for the info in Xorg. And now I'm getting the ATI info from fglrxinfo and glxinfo, that I did not before, but I'm still getting this error when trying 'amdcccle' from root:
Quote:
Qt: Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed

**
GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted

Glxinfo dumps a super long output, so I'm just clipping what seems to be relevent, unless you need the whole thing:

D!!

I have solved the problem! :) I'm only partially upset with myself on this one, because I think I made a reasonable assumption.

The source of my pains? Trying to open 'amdcccle' via SU, instead of SUDO. I didn't even give it a second thought, after all, the launcher in the menu says 'administrative', and I also am pretty sure I've accessed it via 'su' in other distros (but perhaps not...?), so it didn't cross my mind that there would be a difference between the two.

Well, I spent the last couple of hours dredging up errors and googling them, and basically getting no where.

Finally, after seeing some posts where people were posting their commands, and seeing sudo used, it occurred to me to just give it a try.....just for the heck of it, as a last ditch effort..........maybe, just maybe.

So, I try sudo, it fires up, and my dual displays are working as desired!

Ftr, I wasn't completely ignorant on su, sudo and permissions. I understand that some things must be run as root, and other things it is best to run as user so that you don't lock yourself out of something later on. I've read my share of guides on the matter and understand the concept behind using sudo.

But, I did not expect an administrative control panel to disallow superuser access! And, off the top of my head, I can't think of anything else I've come across where root is disallowed access! I always thought root had access to everything.....but apparently not the ATI control panel. ???

Oh, forgot to add one thing for reference. The one thing that began to tip me off to a permissions issue was finding a thread that said to check the following:

Code:
geany .xsession-errors

In that file, I found the following error:
Quote:
amdxdg-su: no graphical method available for invoking 'amdcccle' as 'root'

Why did you not install the package here : viewtopic.php?f=36&t=12050

Otherwise you have to edit the file /usr/share/applications/amdccclesu.desktop
and change "amdxdg-su" by "gksu"

Well, I did look at that thread before installing, but it's been too long now so I can't remember exactly what src/pkg I started with or why.

No problem but for example the desktop file is fixed in this package. ;)
