on my netbook disks spin down after a while if im on battery, can i make it spin down like this when i'm on AC too? maybe after a longer while of inactivity.

I had a similar problem with my IBM X31.
I had this in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Code:
hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda


To see all options :
Code:
hdparm -I /dev/sda

i don't have that, but anyway if i do 'hdparm -B /dev/sda' i see it is set to 254,
if i unplug the ac adapter and do 'hdparm -B /dev/sda' it is set to 128 ( which, judging by the man page is max powersave without spindown)

i wonder what triggers this change ? is there a power management daemon running somwhere?

Maybe upower or xfce-power-manager.
