Been wrestling with a Zenwalk install for a few days on my IBM T23 which is
a dual boot Winows/Puppy Dingo. Finally decided if I am to learn the ins and outs of Zenwalk. I need a dedicated install on its own Hardrive. I have 3
Separate Quick Swap Caddies for this Amrel Laptop. One 100 gig, Win r2000 Pro/NimbleX 2008/Xubuntu 8.04. Another 20 gig Ubuntu 8.0/AntiX 2008. And this 6 gig that I wiped and installed Zenwalk 5.2. I knew 5.2 didn't
have the module for the Belkin F5D7010 PCMCIA Wireless G Card. What
lspci is showing is a Dlink WNA 1330 PCMCIA Wireless G with Atheros Chipset. I don't know why it won't pick it up either. H!!! Nimblex,AntiX,Ubuntu,Puppy Dingo, all connect with this card with little or no effort. Maybe someone can enlighten me because I have been jumping through hoops, making a honest effort to get Zenwalk up and running so I can learn something new for a change. I aint bitchin, just confused and tired
and a little lost at the moment. Time for a Smoke and a beer,Happy Trails.
Edit : Forgot to mention sound and Flash work fine

Update after a couple beers and some thinking. Opened Netpkg and used snapshot from http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... 6/snapshot

You might consider this unsafe but I just went ahead and told it to install Kernel 2.6.28.2 and grabbed my package and held my breath. Took a little while downloading and configuring kernel targz but in the end I was greeted by success. Not being one to be too optimistic. I closed down Net package (Noticed you have to drag the window around in 800X600 resolution) and told the computer to reboot and held my breath again. Takes awhile to boot but as soon as the loading bar starts to move, I hit F2 to see whats going on. I see modules being updated with 2.6.28.2 kernel which is cool. Log into user desktop and open Terminal and type " uname -r " and am greeted with Kernel 2.6.28.2. Yahoo.

Bandipat. I did a search for Zendo. And am intimidated by Missing or Updated dependencies labeled in red.
atk, cairomm, dbus, dbus-glib, directfb, fontconfig, freetype, gcc, glib2, glibmm, gtk+2, gtkmm, libnotify, libpng, libsigc++, pango, wget, xcb, xorg-libs, zpm

Before I install Zendo, I am going to quit while I am ahead and try to understand if these are just updates to existing Dependencies or are they missing dependencies.

Opened Wicd and told it to connect to my wireless router.
Unplugged Lan Cable.
checked wicd moniter at bottom taskbar and it showed connected to my router at 100% with Lan unplugged.
Opened Browser.
I now have Wireless working.

Couldn't have done it without your guys help. Thanks, I'm gonna get plastered now and celebrate. Happy Trails.

Today after doing some more research and experimenting, I now have a better understanding about my statement. I feel somewhat comfortable with Netpkg Manager enough and am Loading Zendo packages as I type this out. I now know that the dependencies concern I had was just a non issue. The adventure continues.

After installing Zendo I am quite pleased. It takes up less screen real estate then Netpkg on this 800X600 screen. That means I don't have to move the Window around to use it. Nice work Sparky and Bandipat. The Wiki provides good instructions http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php?title=HOWTO_use_Zendo.

For any other Questions that might need answering I found this page
http://manual.zenwalk.org/ to be most helpful. I have done about all the documentation on this install I care to do. Hopefully it will help another Amrel User switching over to Zenwalk.

As a side note, This particular Amrel Laptop touchscreen never worked, even with Amrels supplied driver from here http://www.amrel.com/rugged-computers/drivers.asp using Windows 2000. Could be A hardware problem on this particular laptop. Touchscreen doesn't work in Zenwalk either. I can live without it.
What does work
1. Sound
2. Display
3. Touchpad and mouse buttons. Including tapping the mousepad.
4. Battery Moniter if you enable its applet in top taskbar
5. Hardwired Lan
6. Dlink WNA 1330 Wireless b/g Cardbus with Atheros Chipset identified above, (you have to do a kernel upgrade as described in above posts).

All in all a very good operating system that will preform beautifully on this brand of Laptop. I highly recommend this operating System to any body that comes to this thread looking to install a operating system to a empty hardrive on one of these Laptops. It wasn't that difficult.
