Since it's my first message on zenwalk.org, I would like to say hello to everybody

I decided to install Zenwalk on my ancient Compaq Armada 7800 (PII 400MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 16 GB CF-Module as HDD, dual boot with trimmed down Windows XP Proffessional). Anyway, I use this laptop primarily to browse web pages (icewease+adblock) and for listening to the radio over the Internet (mplayer). However, video playback is much better and smoother on winxp with vlc.

After the installation of Zenwalk, I came across some annoyances, which were either quite easy to fix or not of prime importance:

* The laptop used to freeze randomly at resuming from hibernation, but the boot up time is fast enough, so why bother?

* Even though xorg had been set up properly (which is a rare case for other linux distributions known to me), the display was newer powered off at blanking. As a workaround, I use a perl script running in background for monitoring the state of xscreensaver and using vbetool on blank/unblank to power off/on the display accordingly.

* Another issue related to xorg, was crashing of xorg at opening terminal on XFCE desktop. Changing DefaultDepth to 16 in xorg.conf fixed the problem.

* I wasn't surprised that programmable keys on armada7800 didn't work at all (they never do on linux). Workaround: keyboard shortcuts.

* The only major problem I came across was figuring out how to set up alsa for skype. It took me quite a few hours to eventually adjust the mixer settings properly.

The bottom line: Zenwalk linux is a very good distribution of linux even for such an old hardware and has much fewer annoyances than other linux distributions I've tried. Despite the need of lengthy tweaking of the system upon the first installation, my overall experience with zenwalk is positive.
