For instructions on how to compile your own kernel, see Borromini's excellent guide

This is rather a simple tip, courtesy of ks1 on #zenwalk, but one that proved invaluable for me.

The latest kernel release 2.6.17 adds support for some VIA on board sound cards. This added support caused udev to use my onboard sound (snd-via82xx) instead of the driver for my Audigy 2 ZS (snd-emu10k1). Because all my equipment was plugged in to my Audigy card, I got no sound.

If anyone experiences any similair problems, the solution is VERY simple.

First run # lsmod to find the troublesome module (in my case snd_via82xx).

Then, open your favourite text editor to add the following line to your /etc/modprobe.conf:

Code:
blacklist snd-via82xx

On reboot, this fixed my problem immediately.

Once again, thanks to ks1, I hope someone finds this useful.
