Hello everybody,

how can I configure "Wake up on LAN"? For my server I'm using Zenserver 0.5. As motherboard I'm using the M2A-VM. When the Server is switched off I see a green led burning. So there must be ATX Power.

So I asked ethtool:
Quote:
Settings for eth1:
Supported ports: [ TP ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Full
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
1000baseT/Full
Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Speed: 100Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: Twisted Pair
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: on
Supports Wake-on: pumbg
Wake-on: g
Current message level: 0x00000033 (51)
Link detected: yes
root[michael]#

So, WOL should work. Am I right? I also took a look to the bios: But there is nothing offered.

Can somebody tell me how to configure WOL?

WOL must usually be configured at two places:

1) in the BIOS of the motherboard: The motherboard must 'know' that it must respond to a WOL signal
2) in the configuration of the LAN card: It too must know what is to be done when it receives a WOL packet

If the LAN interface is an 'on-motherboard' one, then the two may be 'joined up' into one setting of the BIOS configuration. In your case, (reading the motherboard manual) it seems you have a gigabit on-board LAN interface. In the BIOS/setup of your board, there is supposed to be an option in the 'power' subscreen: 'Power up on PCI/PCIE devices', which is -as far as i see- by default disabled.

Thank you. You are right, it's an onboard Network card. I activated now PowerUponPCI in the bios.

Than I checked out my mac address:
Code:
root[michael]# ifconfig
eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr [b]00:1D:60:F8:20:17 [/b]
          inet addr:192.168.2.210  Bcast:192.168.2.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::21d:60ff:fef8:2017/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:355 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:239 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:32831 (32.0 KiB)  TX bytes:30228 (29.5 KiB)
          Interrupt:20 Base address:0x4000

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
          RX packets:56 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:56 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:4340 (4.2 KiB)  TX bytes:4340 (4.2 KiB)

So than this must be my MAC adress? 00:1D:60:F8:20:17 right? Well, I compiled WOL an run the command on my local notebook:
Code:
michael[~]$ wol 00:1D:60:F8:20:17
Waking up 00:1D:60:F8:20:17...

But it doesn't work... Where's my error?

Can you help me to fix my problem?

P.S. Hey, I'm also living in Karlsruhe...

Sorry, I've never tried wake on lan before. I know that external PCI cards sometimes need a 4 pin wire adapter from the card to the motherboard, but for an onboard NIC you have to worry about that :-).

I often refer to the Gentoo Wiki, and they seem to have a good sumary of this:

(Currently the wiki is down, so I used Google cache)

Cheers,

Thank you very much! The Gentoo WIKI is great!

Why WOL doesn't work by default:
By default Linux shuts down your LAN device, but this is needed to start your computer. Now you disable in the rc.6 shutdown script the shutdown of the lan device. And it works great!
