Hi,
First off thanks to the Zenwalk team for the new release!

I just got ZW 6.0 installed, I'm very fond of using pcmanfm as my file manager and been
happy using it during pre-6.0. I reinstalled everything from scratch, for some reason the
"Open current folder as root" doesn't work anymore. I may have missed some setting,
but I don't know what it is. ( could it be something in sudoer's visudo?)
I get this error if I use my user pass:
Code:
Failed to run pcmanfm --no-desktop '/' as user root

If I use the root pass, nothing happens.

edit1:
this is part of the error:
Code:
The underlying authorization mechanism (sudo) does not allow you to run this program.
Contact the system administrator.

using gksu on command prompt and app launcher works,
but it would be nice if I could make use of the the tool menu of pcmanfm
to 'open folder as root', like it used to be. When I clicked on that menu
I am given a prompt to enter password and supposed to open a
new pcmanfm window as if I launch it with gksu, but it doesn't work.

thanks.

The developer of pcmanfm, sadly has not updated it in a very long time. I believe he is busy with lxde window manager, so puts little time in fixing or continued development of pcmanfm for anything but the lxde. I have been maintaining the program for Zenwalk, but will eventually drop it since it's just not being kept up to date. You can write the author of the program, but you're only likely to get an answer of "don't write me about this, I have no time to work on it!"

I would suggest finding something better to use for now that serves your purpose and is getting better development. Thunar has progressed nicely, as the xfce4 devs keep it up and krusader, a KDE program, might make you smile with all it's features! You will need to install some KDE stuff, but it's minimal and Zendo will take care of the deps needed.

It's still usable, just that non functioning option.
I'm thankful that Thunar has improved, I still like the few
extra that pcmanfm offers (e.g. switchable tree view on left pane with one click, tabs)
But I guess if I have no other choice I would have to stick with what works.

Thanks.

This function (Open Current Folder as Root) works if you implement sudo and use the normal password of the user. It is not configured to accept root password.

Kindly don't blame the developer. It has many other features (tabs and mounting a partition when required) including this one (ability to open a folder as root) which are missing in Thunar.

@kagashe
I was merely asking for help on settings I may have missed, (read my firs post) and not blaming anyone.
Anyhow, my fix is as gapan suggested use gksu, I add two app launcher on my panel, one using gksu.
It could very well be a sudoer setup, but I'm not sure what to do, hence the asking for help.

I guess I could just prefix this thread with solved now.

@ mhel
I am using this function (Open Current Folder as root) on Zenwalk 6.0 the way you want it. I have setup sudo as follows:
1. Open Netpkg install sudo
Note: In my case it was already installed by default and same may be true for you but it it better to check before the next step.

2. Open Terminal
Quote:
$ su
Password
# visudo

Note this will open an empty file /etc/sudoers.tmp
write the file as follows:
USER_NAME ALL=(ALL) ALL
after replacing USER_NAME with the userid who will be authorized to execute command as root with his password.
Quote:
:wq

3. Now "Open Current Folder as root" should work with password of the user (not the root password)..

now that works out quite well, I knew it was something to do with sudoers :)
I've done it only once and not too long ago, I just couldn't remember what, now I do.

thanks a lot.
