I'm collecting all my Zenwalk/Linux as well as Windows experiences with my T61 on http://thrasymach.us
The content is still hidden, but check back in a month's time. Together we can make the T61 perform like a dream on Zenwalk!
( Beware of kernel 2.6.27 tho: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=18836 )

I had to install ubuntu on two thinkpads lately
- one of the owner is otherwise quite happy with Zenwalk on his desktop.
Despite of (daily) crashes not experienced with zw before,
he wants all the bells & whistles ubuntu provides for the Txx series...
would be nice to get those out-of-the-box in Zenwalk too ;)

I've just installed zenwalk 5.2 on my thinkpad t61, and for some reason the hardware volume control buttons do not do anything. I've had zenwalk installed on my desktop/gaming rig before, but that didn't have external volume controls. Otherwise, everything appears to work fine on my thinkpad other than some xfce quirks I have to sort out. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this or set it up? The volume controls are (from left to right) MUTE, VOLUME DOWN, VOLUME UP.

Please reply, or PM me.

They require some extra steps (and the T61 may require more than earlier TPs). For a start, have a look here:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_ge ... ys_to_work

There is also a TP related package that may have some bearing:

http://www.nongnu.org/tpb/

From that, it seems that the T61 may require special attention. I'll see if I can find time to build the svn version, but you will need to test it, since it may not work with my old T42.

I'll let you know if I manage to get it to build.

paul.

Alright, TYVM. I'll try these aforementioned things.

Hello!

Sign me up please! \!D/

I just installed zenwalk frugal on a USB and I'm really happy with it. I have an X32 and a T40 and I can use them both thanks to the USB 8)

So I guess I'll be the lucky number #013 then!

Here's from my ongoing howto on this particular ThinkPad model:
Quote:
4. Sound
The ThinkPad T61 uses the snd_hda_intel sound module, which was not loaded on my system for whatever reason. If you read different websites there are private hacks and patches, but according to thinkwiki* this device is supported by the kernel since 2.6.23 (which includes alsa 1.0.15 that has the three necessary patches). I struggled quite a bit with conflicting information before finding out how to start sound, but this is it (as root):
Code:
# modprobe snd_hda_intel
# alsaconf [choose the intel HDA whatever whatever]
# alsamixer [unmute speaker. mute headphones. leave anything else as is.]

To mute or unmute in alsamixer you simply choose the right channel and press 'm'. Press Esc to exit and save. If there is sound when you play an mp3 file now, make sure to add the module to your list at /etc/modules

If you still don't get any sound try 1) pressing the Volume Up special key a few times and 2) enable your modem in BIOS or n) additional troubleshooting..

The problem I have with T61's built-in audio is that it doesn't record digital playback, which makes sound editing so much harder:P

1) I'm using T61 with Zenwalk 6.0, thinkpad-acpi is included in the kernel. Why don't the volume buttons work?

2) Should I check Laptop mode and swappiness 0?

Thanks

Try adding the snd_hda_intel module over again. I did it twice by mistake and then it worked.. !
Don't know about swapiness. Isn't that for hibernation/sleep? I don't use that. Either I'm 100% working or I'm 100% in bed:)

Thanks but I couldn't make it work.
When I tried to use xkernelconf to remove or load the kernel module the tool became unresponsive.
I went to init 3 and there I did modprobe -r and then modprobe to reload the module.
Then back to init 4, and nothing changed.

And about Laptop mode and swappiness see here.

For an overview of how to get IBM/Lenovo special keys to work, have a look here:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_ge ... ys_to_work

Also, this gives further information on the tpb package. I've meant to see if I can build a Zenwalk package for it - I'll see if I can get the time sometime this week:

So, what exacly are the features of thinkpad_acpi?
From the Thinkwiki it seems that thinkpad_acpi should all kind of acpi events. However, on my Zenwalk system there seems to be no difference. No keyboard short cuts was working out of the box. I had to add Fn-F4 and Fn-F12 myself and I had to get script to kill the bluetooth.

Should I do something special to enable the features of thinkpad_acpi? It is loaded according to xkernelconf.

Thanks,
Rasmus

Have a look at the two links I referenced above (though thinkwiki seems to be down at the moment). They give you all the information you need for setting up keys. Most key events are now handled by HAL, but there is also the tpb package as well.

From http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi :
Quote:
HOTKEYS
To view which hotkeys are active you can use "acpi_listen", but that is deprecated. A better way is to use "lsinput" and "input-events" commands to look at the output of the thinkpad-acpi input device(s).

One important difference from ibm-acpi for those who wish to enable all possible hot keys, is that thinkpad-acpi automatically enables them. One should not need to do anything to get the best possible thinkpad-acpi configuration for his ThinkPad (as long as he is using the latest thinkpad-acpi).

In particular, old documentation that tells you to "echo enable,0xffffffff >/proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey", or to give thinkpad-acpi any hotkey= module parameters to enable hot keys by default, is likely incorrect.

The thinkpad-acpi driver has detailed documentation, which is shipped inside the Linux kernel sources, as "Documentation/thinkpad-acpi.txt" or as "Documentation/laptops/thinkpad-acpi.txt". If you feel a need to change the hot key mask manually, it is probably best to look at that documentation first to understand the full side effects of any changes.

So, if I were you, I'd look for thinkpad-acpi.txt :)
The tpb package should not be used. But that depends on the version of thinkpad-acpi used.

Hello Paul,
On the Thinkwiki it states that a lot of Fn-Fx combinations are already set. For example should Fn-F2 lock the screen. However, this is not happening. The only Fn-Fx combination that are working on my system are the ones that I have configured myself. However, from the Thinkwiki article it seems like a lot of Fn-Fx combinations should be configured "out-of-the-box". Am I mistaking something?

Thanks,
Rasmus
