Zenwalk Live 6.0, the latest Zenwalk in its Live CD format is ready!

Based on Zenwalk current repository, Zenwalk live 6.0 is, as it should be, an almost perfect clone of the latest Zenwalk 6.0 with the addition of the latest security patches & bug fixes. Zenwalk Live 6.0 uses the version 6.2.9 of the Linux Live scripts & its kernel 2.6.28.7 is patched with Aufs2-20090327, Squashfs3.4, Lzma457 along with Sqlzma3.4-457.

Our native utilities LiloFix & LiveClone have been entirely rewritten with Glade/Python and new functionalities have been added to LiveClone, which will now enable you not only to generate your own customized LiveCD, but also your own customized, --or standard Zenwalk-- Live USB key, with --or without-- persistent changes. This will come in very handy for those of you who must use diversified computer access & wish to retain the same environment --along with your own work projects-- in any of the computers you happen to use without having to install anything. Simply boot on your own customized Zenwalk Live USB key from anywhere & from any machine & you will be... at home!

If you just recently migrated to Linux, a Beginner's Guide will assist & hand-guide you through all the basics, ranging from how to surf the web, write an email or chat from your new Zenwalk Linux environment, all the way to installing new programs or using any of Zenwalk system utilities.

For power users, our usual Technical Guide focusing on LiveCD internals, is also available, with information on advanced usage & customization.

International support has always been of utmost concern for Zenwalk Live and in keeping with this tradition, input support for some Asian languages through Uim has now been added as well as a new dedicated booting option for Japanese users.

Zenwalk Live 6.0, just like its counterpart Zenwalk 6.0, includes a lightweight and optimized version of OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, replacing Abiword and Gnumeric. Included OpenOffice.org modules are Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw. DVD-video creation capabilities have been added to Brasero & Totem comes with youtube, jamendo and BBC plugins enabled by default.

Other significant changes in this release are:

- Faster boot (tuned init scripts, with realtime I/O scheduler)
- New Control Panel with integrated Disk Manager, Wifi and Wired Network Manager
- Gksu keyring based desktop granting system
- PAM authentication has been added to the system
- New Netpkg with orphan dependencies and "offline operation" support
- The powerful Exaile music jukebox has been added
- Gthumb has replaced Gqview and Gtkam for viewing images and importing them from your camera
- The Lightning PIM extension for Icedove is installed by default
- New artwork

Zenwalk Live 6.0 comes with a complete programming environment and libraries to provide an ideal platform for application programmers, all included in a "single LiveCD" iso.

We hope you will have great fun using this new LiveCD edition of Zenwalk & that its easy customization functionalities will be of great use to you.

The live version will take Zenwalk to even more new people who want to test it.
And the ability to run Zenwalk from usb is great!
They already know...

Sorry, there was a problem with the iso I posted earlier. It is fixed now and the mirrors have been refreshed.

In case you already downloaded it please check the md5, the correct one should be:
8a4c7e9d83877092f2aa5e19ea6f5f63 zenwalk-live-6.0.iso

Sorry for the trouble.

Edit: 14/05

Just uploaded a bugfix version which is symlinked to the previous version to spare unnecessary downloads:
http://zenlive.linuxish.net/current/zen ... -6.0.1.iso
http://zenlive.linuxish.net/current/zen ... -6.0.1.md5

The correct md5 is now:
38bb67ccf37f1783d7906b7699c6c39a zenwalk-live-6.0.1.iso

The new one should be or the old one should be 8a4c7e9d83877092f2aa5e19ea6f5f63 zenwalk-live-6.0.iso?

Anyway, the one that I downloaded still works/boots to a fairly quick desktop. My only complaint is certain kernel modules are missing. For me specifically pci_hotplug and pciehp. Both are need for the SD/MMC card readers in the Acer Aspire One A150 netbooks that are so popular. Xkernelconf list them available, but you can't add them. Catfish can't find either. And modprobe returns WARNING and FATAL.

BTW, Zenwalk 6.0 standard includes them and they work quite well.

This is odd...

From kernelive .config file:
# CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI is not set

So unfortunately these modules are absent from the LiveCD.

If that can be a comfort, they probably will be included next time.

Is Zenwalk live similar to Slax? That is can it easily be run USB and can settings be saved in between uses? Also, can I install extra packages and have them available in next session?
Finally, would it be easy to make a script to sync settings from your main Zenwalk to your Zenlive?
Again, thanks for this release.

Use liveclone or persistence

Code:
cp -ar /etc /mylife/
cp -ar /home /mylife/

Assuming you have mounted the root fs tree of ISO to modify to /mylife/ previously.
Another (easier) approach would be to boot with ZenLive and to use it like this:
Code:
cp -ar /mnt/sda1/etc /
cp -ar /mnt/sda1/home /

(Adapt sda1 to the partition where the root to save resides.)
Then run liveclone and your settings should be on your LiveCD.

I didn't test this though. But I think it's basically the right approach.

The download is very slow. Maybe a torrent will be faster?

When I start from the main page www.zenwalk.org
and click on Live Edition and then Download.
I still get zenwalk-live-5.2.iso

zenlive.linuxish.net was pretty fast here. Faster than torrents usually are here.

Is there an option to skip graphical login (init 3) ? My notebook just stops spinning CD after "Configuring X server", both in normal and safe graphics mode D!!

Select your language, then in the menu where you can choose what to boot let the default entry selected press TAB and in the appearing prompt append " 3" at the end. Then press ENTER to boot. This should put you to runlevel 3. Like that you can also boot to any other runlevel, e.g. 1.
