I don't know if this is an Amarok bug, or an XFCE bug, or what, and I'm pretty sure I've seen the problem with at least one other app but I can't think of what it is at the moment.

There are a couple of problems here.

1) Sometimes, when opening Amarok, the splash screen appears, but the main window does not, and there is no panel button or icon to click on.

2) When clicking the 'X' to 'soft close', or minimize, the app is minimized but there is no panel button or icon.

In either case, in order to raise the window, I must rerun the app from the menu. Note that the app still shows in the process list, even when invisible, and music can still be played. Everything seems fine, it's just missing a panel indicator.

The standard minimize icon '_' seems to work normally.

Can you try to start amarok from a console to see the errors messages ?

Just to save one iteration, i suggest you start from console using

Code:
amarok --debug

and: i routinely run amarok in combination with kde, and have no complaints...

And: -probably 'overdone'- / /- to be entirely on the safe side-
you are sure that you have 'x'-ed the 'show tray icon' option of

amarok-->settings-->configure amarok-->general

i presume?

Ok, I tried running with the --debug option, and that outputs a massive amount of info; I'm not even sure what to look for there.

I did have the tray icon option checked.

Running without the --debug option, I only see a handful of duplicate errors that seem unrelated:
Code:
QWidget::setMinimumSize: (Playlist dock/Playlist::Dock) Negative sizes (323,-1) are not possible
mxx[~]$ QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(Solid::DeviceInterface::Type)  error:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"

Just a guess, but is your hald service running?
We need KDE 4.6 before we can use just udev,

Zenwalk Openbox has
Code:
# Start the HAL daemon:
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.hald ]; then
  /usr/bin/ionice -c1 -n0 /etc/rc.d/rc.hald start
fi
in /etc/rc.d/rc.M just after the udev lines.

If you try from a zenwalk 7.0, hal was removed.
So install it by "netpkg hal"
