OK.

The usual xorg.conf editing question. What do I need to change or do to get this laptop to actually use different screen sizes? It only list one size under display. Everything is so small, I can barely read anything. Size is 1680x1050 and I want 1280x800

Here is my xorgconf file. This is a IBM Thinkpad lenovo T61 running ZW 7.

Thanks

Thanks azertyh

I had previously seen 2 of those threads, but not the one you mentioned.

I TOTALLY suck at any command line stuff, which I know I'm going to need to do here to delete xorg.conf from /etc/X11, so might as well ask right now.

How do I do that?

Thanks again

Edit:
Yep,
Obviously need to delete xorg.conf after running liloconfig as just doing that only gets me the text mode boot screen. Does not change anything else. Will wait for step in how to delete the xorg.conf file. I know I can search for it, but that is what has led me to getting frustrated with Linux every time I've used it so far and reverting back to Windows.

There's a lovely text based file manager called mc which will let you do most things without worrying about the command line.

However, if you're looking to learn something new, here are some good tutorials http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/cli.html

to delete it, run this command as root
Code:
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

be aware of the upper and lowercase.
another way is to delete it from thunar : type thunar as root in a terminal.

I don't understand where are you.
Even if you have a wrong resolution means that you can log as root
then open file manager go to
File system
/etc/X11 and just drug and drop xorg.conf to where you like or just delete
(you can always restore from trash if you ever need again)
You don't need CL.

Now I supose that is an Intel graphic card. if not all that posts are wrong for you.
Now you say that after running lilo you cannot log anymore in a gui and you
can only log in a console. That's correct?
If so log as root and then run
startx
If X does not start now is a problem, to delete xorg.conf is just to solve
some problems whit synaptics does not create to much problems.
Did you run videoconfig and forgot to change the degault log ?
Did you run liloconfig and you did exactly
choose standard linux console
and at boot parameters did you write
i915.modeset=1
there is a dot after i915 (i915 is the linux driver for intel)
Try startx

Thank you.

That's the part I THINK I need after running liloconfig

@franco
Yes,
It is an Intel graphics card. I think it's a 915 but might be a 965. Not on the laptop right now so can't verify.

No,
That is not correct as far as logging in with a gui. I do still get to that, but have the scrolling text screen, like you can do if you hit escape or tab when booting up, instead of the Zenwalk logo with the sliding bar, if I'm describing that correctly?

No,
I did not run videoconfig. I did run liloconfig and yes, I saw the dot after i915 and yes, I did choose standard linux console.

Now the part that you are confusing me with.
What do you mean "Now I supose that is an Intel graphic card. if not all that posts are wrong for you." All posts are wrong?

Thanks people and sorry for being so brain dead. As much as I've used Linux off and on, the file system still screws me up!! :'(

Edit:
Doing a bunch of searches for a Lenovo t61 6460 7eu and all are saying it has a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M or NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics chipset. I'm almost positive when I looked under the hardware lister earlier today, it said Intel.

To know if intel or nvdia you can use

1)lshw/notebook/motherboard/host bridge/vga compatible controller
2)from terminal run
lsmod
(means list all modules)
it should show you i915 for video (linux list as i915 but probalbly is 965, do not
worry)
3)read also Xorg.0.log in /var/log
If you did choose standard linux console is normal to have at boot
"the scrolling text screen"
Try this
Go to settings/display/resolution and switch to a lower one
or maybe just ,always in settings, go to
appearance/fonts and use a bigger one.

If is an nvidia card check the posts or ask for help again. I have no practice.
If is an nvidia card of course all the post is wrong. We are trying to configure
an Intel.

Thank you franco. Probably won't be able to get at this until tomorrow.

"Go to settings/display/resolution and switch to a lower one
or maybe just ,always in settings, go to
appearance/fonts and use a bigger one."

That part of your reply is my entire issue. I have NO other option in display/resolution to choose from. This, 1680x1050, is the ONLY size I have. I want a 1280x800 size screen.

I'm going to assume, if it is an Intel, that what I need to do now is run liloconfig again and then rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf and hope for the best?!

Try
first just liloconfig
if does not work try videoconfig but in my experience it give you back a vesa configuration.
For me what is strange in your problem is this high resolution.
Let see.

I already did just the liloconfig, exactly as you posted above, which only gave me the rolling text boot screen until I reached the desktop. Are you asking me to do JUST THAT again?

I will try the videoconfig next time I'm on laptop. Maybe I can get on it this evening to try, otherwise it will be tomorrow morning.

Thanks again

You can try to remove xf86-video-intel
and see what happen after reboot.
Not to much to say at this point.

Like I said, I will try what you have suggested as soon as I get a chance and let you know. I did see a couple search results saying it had that particular Intel chipset also though, but MOST said Nvidia.

Thank you very much.

Problem solved!!

Removed Zenwalk and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. Can now make screen size ANY size I want it to be.

Turns out this laptop has Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics, which is VERY easy to determine under Windows.

Really wish this hadn't been such a stupid reason for installing Windows, but have neither the time nor the patience to try and "fix" something that shouldn't even have to be touched to begin with. Zenwalk 7 is definitely a very sweet Linux distro, but unfortunately, this is exactly why Linux will probably never be ready for prime time..

I do appreciate the effort you people put forth in trying to help me fix this.

Thank you
