Hi,

I'm on ZW snapshot. It works really like a charm, except for the wireless card.

I'm using the NetworkManager. If I try to connect to my wireless hotspot, I get a message that I'm now connected.

ifconfig wlan0
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:FB:64:98:6C
inet addr:192.168.178.22 Bcast:192.168.178.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 <- so, I get an IP address here!
inet6 addr: fe80::222:fbff:fe64:986c/64 Scope:Link <- I don't need an IPv6 address
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:37 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:20 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:13744 (13.4 Kb) TX bytes:2350 (2.2 Kb)

lsmod | grep iw <- on ZW 6.2 I had additionally iwlcore
iwlagn 118424 0
mac80211 123320 1 iwlagn
cfg80211 89848 2 iwlagn,mac80211

Do I still need the module iwlcore? If yes, where do I get it from?

Thx in advance.

Hi Bip,

here we go. That's what I found right now after I tried connecting to my hotspot.

NetworkManager[737]: <warn> No agents were available for this request.
Oct 22 21:19:18 (none) NetworkManager[737]: <warn> Activation (wlan0) failed for access point (my hotspot)
Oct 22 21:19:18 (none) NetworkManager[737]: <warn> Activation (wlan0) failed.

Oct 22 21:20:42 (none) NetworkManager[737]: <warn> (pid 1598) unhandled DHCP event for interface eth0
Oct 22 21:21:41 (none) NetworkManager[737]: <warn> (pid 1846) unhandled DHCP event for interface wlan0

Btw, I using NetworkManager because wicd daemon is shut down every time I start Zenwalk. So I removed it completely.

regards,

The MoD

When you removed wicd, did you remove the rc.wicd file in /etc/rc.d ?

Can you check also in /var/log/syslog file ?

No. the rc.wicd file was there. However, it was not executable. Renamed it to rc.wicd.old. Rebooted.

The LED is up, sometimes blinking. However, I can't access any web site using wireless.

This is what I get:

ifconfig wlan0
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:FB:64:98:6C
inet addr:192.168.178.22 Bcast:192.168.178.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::222:fbff:fe64:986c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:43 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:28 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:3330 (3.2 Kb) TX bytes:3146 (3.0 Kb)

tail /var/log/messages
Oct 23 09:44:15 (none) kernel: Unknown OutputIN= OUT=wlan0 SRC=192.168.178.22 DST=91.121.50.95 LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=41546 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=50123 DPT=80 WINDOW=14600 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0

cat /var/log/syslog | grep wicd
-> nothing

cat /var/log/syslog | grep daemon
Oct 21 19:53:37 (none) avahi-daemon[1640]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP failed: No buffer space available
Oct 21 19:53:54 (none) avahi-daemon[1640]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP failed: No buffer space available
Oct 21 19:54:34 (none) avahi-daemon[1640]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP failed: No buffer space available
Oct 21 19:55:34 (none) avahi-daemon[1640]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP failed: No buffer space available
It's two days old! Could be while using wicd. In order to reproduce it exactly I would need to reinstall wicd.

cat /var/log/syslog | grep 5100
-> nothing

What else can I look for?

Does this mean you can address your router, but not the internet? Have you tried to ping?
If you can ping for example, 4.2.2.2, but not http://www.google.com or http://www.yahoo.com, then it could be a DNS issue.

This is what I get while NM says I'm connected to wireless:

Pinging the wireless AP
ping 192.168.178.1
PING 192.168.178.1 (192.168.178.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted

Trying www.zenwalk.org
ping www.zenwalk.org
ping: unknown host www.zenwalk.org

ping 91.121.50.95
PING 91.121.50.95 (91.121.50.95) 56(84) bytes of data.
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted

While using eth0 everything works just fine.

Sound like a permission problem
Can you try
as root go to
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
and delete the file you find there (your connection)
reboot
and configure again your network

How have you configured nm wireless settings? Are you using DHCP? Is the box 'Require IPv4 addressing......' ticked?
and IPv6 ignored? This is at least is how mine is configured and it works. You could try to configure manually instead.
Does /etc/resolv.conf show the right DNS settings?

NM just says: Connection established. You are now connected to wireless network "my AP".

Deleted the file for the wireless connection and set it up again. Mode is "Infrastructure". MAC address is the one of my WLAN0 interface. Method is Automatic DHCP. "Require IPv4 addressing" is ticked. IPv6 is ignored. Security is WPA and WPA2. PW is stored there.

/etc/resolv.conf says? Should be your DNS-servers, information NM retrieves from your router.
Reset the router? Something wrong in the routers settings???
Have you tried an unsecured connection, just to see if that works?

cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 192.168.178.1 this is correct

router settings are correct. My wife can connect w/o any problem.

I'll try an unsecured connection once she is offline (to maintain the WAF ;-))

Hi,
I think the nameserver mentioned is the IP-address of your router. (looks a lot like mine). It should be the DNS of your internetprovider. You can google these or look in the router-settings. Mostly there are two. You could then try to manually add these to NM-applet which should then generate a new resolv.conf.

Good luck, Blackbird
