Hello,

I just installed a Zenwalk 7.0 on my new laptop computer , a packard bell Easynote LS11. The wireless net card is a REALTEK 8192se and, although I was able to compile a driver downloaded (from Ubuntu !) and everything went fine, the module r8192se_pci is loaded at start but WICD isn't detecting any network. So, until now I can't get on the web under Zenwalk...
(I still can work with the windows 7 partition)
Any suggestion ?

After a quick search I found this : http://www.linwik.com/wiki/using+the+re ... buntu+9.10

It seems not really good supported under linux but you can try the solution proposed on my link.
You can directly start in point 4.

Thank you for the try but, as I mentioned it in my post I DID download the ubuntu driver and performed the steps. My problem is that WICD is NOT handling it. I may have to set up the network manually.

Ifconfig , alone, is not finding the wireless network BUT [ifconfig wlan0] does repport the correct card (8192se).

Your wifi is crypted ?
If yes can you try without any protection ?

Did you try to launch wicd from a console to see the errors ?

Hi,
I've got a Realtek rtl8191SU card which uses the same drivers, had some trouble getting it working, but the post at the bottom of this page
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/128372
helped me to get it working. It's the answer from Mark Rijckenberg (you have to scroll right down to the end) about the .bin file that did the trick.

Blackbird : I don't understand the page you sent me ; a lot of commands...

Wicd has no errors and no problem : it's just sayong there is no wireless network while my livebox is here and working under windows... (same computer - the other partition)

Here is the outcome of the command (as root , in a console) iwconfig wlan0 :

wlan0 802.11bg Nickname:"rtl8192SE"
Mode: Managed Accesspoint: Not-Associated Bit Rate: 1 Mb/s
Retry:on RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=-100 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Note : I put the key off (hence Encryption key:off)

Here is the output of ifconfig wlan0 (under root , in a console):

root[~]# ifconfig wlan0

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 68:A3:C4:8E:FB:F1 BROADCAST MULTICAST
MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) Interrupt:17 Memory:f8a00000-f8a00100

In kernel 3.04 (you will find the pkg in snapshot mirrors) there is
rtl8192se
sometimes the kernel need to load some other driver or libs to make it
work
If you want to try
install the new kernel + kernel-firmware
After installing remember to run as root
lilo -v
reboot
In wicd /preferences/advanced settings check what driver is using
for wpa-supplicant sometimes I see problems there, should be
wext

check also if there is problem whit your firewall also esclude to try
Everytime you change something in wicd just click refresh

The lines I was referring to were these:
Quote:
I think that the problem is that the firmware file rtl8192sfw.bin is installed in the "wrong place" (by default).

The firmware file rtl8192sfw.bin is installed and located in /lib/firmware/RTL8192SE

However the rtl819xU wireless driver is searching for the firmware file in the directory /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU

that 's why I said to scroll down to the bottom of the page.
Notice in Ubuntu they seem to have a RTL8192SE folder in/lib/firmware, I have a RTL8192E folder.
Next thing I did was download the .bin file from
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/kernel/dists/trunk/firmware-nonfree/realtek/RTL8192SU/rtl8192sfw.bin
and pasted it in the /lib/firmware/RTL8192E folder.
Then I made the two symbolic links like suggested, only omit the S in RTL8192SE (if you have, like me, a RTL 8192E folder) , like so:
ln -s /lib/firmware/RTL8192E /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU
ln -s /lib/firmware/RTL8192E /lib/firmware/RTL8192S

For me this worked and Wicd picked up the networks.

Blackbird

Edit: I must stress I started out with the RTL 8192SU driver from the Realtek site, this is not exactly the same one as for the 8191. But as I ended up having 8192 folders and files, I was hoping you could use some of the information.
I also installed this one:
