Hi, since german board seems not alive, I post duplicate in english:

I use 7.0 with all Updates, which came over Netpkg
Icecat is now in version 3.6.15

Directly after submitting
route.web.de
Icecat crashes.
So I couldn't fill the "Report erroneous web-site"
Many other pages have same result, e.g. many sub pages at Amazon
Can someone verify this problem please?
How can I fix the problem?

I have seen at Mozilla, that version 3.6 is no longer supported.
Why can't I have newer version from Netpkg?
What should I do best?

You can install firefox instead of icecat.

Download package here : http://packages.zenwalk.org/?p=mozilla- ... n=snapshot
Open a terminal in root mode.
Remove Icecat :
Code:
removepkg /var/log/packages/icecat*

Go to the directory where you are downloaded the firefox file and tape :
Code:
installpkg mozilla-firefox-12.0-i486-1.txz

Otherwise you can try opera or chromium.

Hi, thanks for the 1. answer.

What about my profile with bookmarks, passwords and other settings?
Will they be save when doing? :
Code:
removepkg /var/log/packages/icecat*

Can I first install Firefox, import profile/settings form Icecat, and after remove Icecat packages? What's the best practice to migrate old Icecat 3.6 profile to FF 12?

What can I expect from Zenwalk 7.2?
Will there be Icecat 12?
Will I have problems to later upgrade to 7.2, when released, if I install FF 12 now in advance?

Another problem: Do you think, a 384 MB 1GHz Pentium III mobile machine will have enough resources for FF 12 in contrast to Icecat 3.6?

BTW, the described Problem occurred since 2 weeks, after I updated Zenwalk. There have been new flash player packages. I'm afraid, this is the reason for the crash, so how can I reinstall the former flash version to test again.
But as it is not recommended to use old flashplayer versions because of security risk, is there a new update since 17 May 2012 or prospected for the next days?

And finally I'm afraid, the problem will remain with new Firefox 12, if the reason is the flash player plugin.

When you remove package, the config file are not erase because it is in the personnal user directory.
You can save your icecat bookmarkt to be sure to not lose it.
You can find a lot of flash packages here http://download.zenwalk.org/people/gmg/iso/

What is your problem with flashplayer ?

Try with firefox and report problem if you have.
For zenwalk-7.2, firefox is the web-navigator by default.

Hi,
I encounterd the same problem on my oldie with AMD sempron CPU with Icecat, tried Firefox, it doesn't crash because it has a crahsprotector, but flash does not work. So I did some googling, and it seems Flash starting from version 11.2 does not work with CPU's that don't support the SSE2 instruction set (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2). That would be my sempron or your Pentium III.
So just for the test, I installed flash 11.1.102.55, the package is in /var/packages/xap, and it worked.
I do have an other version of Icecat though, so perhaps I'm totally wrong.

On zenwalk-7.0, probably it's better to use this PACKAGE version of mozilla-firefox:

Now I'm here again on the problem machine.
Thanks for all your hints.
After disabling Shockwave flash plugin 11.2 r202, no crash any more.

So it seems, Netpkg should test for CPU's that don't support the SSE2 instruction set, and then should not provide flash plugin > 11.1. Is that possible?

But what's about this alternative, it's version 10.3.183.19 :
http://get.adobe.com/de/flashplayer/
After disabling flash and testing Youtube I was redirected to there, to download Adobe flash player.

I still hesitate to install FF 12, because of some unanswered questions above concerning potential performance and future Zenwalk upgrade problems.
Additionally which one to take, from Zenwalk repository, or the one, directly from Slakware. I have no idea about the difference, and why gmg suggests Slackware.

One question again:
Does Zenwalk 7.2 include Firefox or Icecat 12 ?

Hi,
I am getting convinced now it is to do with the latest flash and SSE2:
https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3161034

Icecat and Firefox are basically the same, and they both have a built-in crashprotector which prevents the browser from crashing when something goes wrong with a plugin. I think on the older versions it is disabled by default, not sure about that, that's why you have a crash with flash on Icecat and Firefox just shows a black box as described at bugbase.
You can have a look in about:config, search for dom.ipc and put dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to true
Don't know about the old Icecat, but the later versions were slowed down, froze for half a minute or so on some sites, when you did this. But you can see if it stops the crashing.

Thanks for the interesting link. So it would not help to install Adobe flash plugin instead Shockwave plugin from Zenwalk repository.
==> On old CPU's one should use version < 11.2 from Zenwalk repository.

No, to my knowledge, the crash protection technique was first introduced by Firefox 4.0, so Icecat 3.6 shouldn't have it. It basically works by running plugins by a separate OS process. If they crash, then the browser only shows a gray/black box, but doesn't crash itself. You can see the additional processes in task manager. On Windows they are named "plugin-container.exe"

Hi,
Bipbip mentioned earlier where you could find and download an older flash, or if you had a working flash before, this package should be in your filesystem, in /var/packages/xap, I got the 11.1.102, which works, from there. Don't know about the severity of the security-risks, for me this is just an old computer for experimenting.
And about the crashprotector, I googled that one ;D , it was first introduced in Firefox 3.6, so it should be in your Icecat..

1:0 for you, thanks, I will try to configure that, next time I'm at this machine.

Yes, I've uninstalled 11.2 version and installed latest 11.1 version as Bipbip suggested.
--> Icecat now is running fine again. Thanks to all.
When Zenwalk 7.2 is out, and suggested for this 384 MB 1GHz Pentium III mobile machine, I will try an upgrade.
