10min into the upgrade, no adverse effect so far and no expectation of any negative surprise.
Smooth work as always, bipbip; very many thanks! :)

Very many thanks again for your work, bipbip. :)

Unfortunately though I still obtain a segmentation fault at boot after installing your driver upgrade and following the usual procedure from init 3:
Code:
# ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri /usr/lib/dri
ln: failed to create symbolic link `/usr/lib/dri/dri': File exists
# aticonfig --initial

It appears that fglrx is the culprit but can't work out too much information from the Xorg.0.log file, which follows:

Does anybody have a pointer of some sorts as to how to set-up the open-source graphics driver? I'm told by bipbip that this could be a solution to my problem, being as the ati-fglrx driver seems not to be compatible with the latest Xorg windows system. H!!!

With many thanks in advance for your help!

Very agreeable, gmg: nice one. :)

In the meantime I'm left somewhat stranded, in that I can't find any (semi-) automated way to have my system picking up my video-card settings correctly: my xorg.conf file looks very scant at 80-something, mostly commented-out lines (can post later if anyone's curious).

What I think I'll end up doing is to hand-edit my xorg.conf file !8! to enable it picking the open-source mesa driver. More on my luck in progressing on this later... ::)

Many thanks for this, gmg.

Do you reckon this would help my xorg.cong correctly recognising my system's specs?

OK, well... given my limited :-[ knowledge in the field of graphic cards I might as well give them a try and see whether I get lucky.

Stay tuned...

Well, I've got some news regarding my late ati-fglrx driver ordeal; it seems to be a documented bug that's been causing quite a stir even outside the ZW users community.

Now, back to gmg's suggestion, I've had limited luck with implementing it; after Googling aplenty, I bumped into this ArchWiki page and followed instructions therein: in particular I've commented out the radeon and radeonfb entries in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and edited a freshly generated xorg.conf with the info on Radeon from that Wiki entry.

At present my X server would start, yet after hanging at boot on a black screen with an irregularly blinking cursor on the top-left corner of the screen; I also have a slightly messed keyboard configuration ("end" pops up the xfce window menu, "arrow up" enables screen-shooter...), and a fan that never stops running. ::)

I do however see a glimpse of hope, dating just a couple of hours ago! :o It seems to be a circumventable issue after all... Is there any ZenWalker out there with more expertise than myself willing to look into this?

With a bunch of thanks in advance for any help!

I welcome this news like believers had awaited the Messiah, bipbip! \!D/
Having blacklisted again kernel modules radeon and radeonfb, I've followed the usual procedure for a fresh install of your updated fglrx driver. The good news is that at last my X server started seemingly all right. \!D/
Yet my keyboard configuration still appears screwed, as I'd previously outlined. Following is my current xorg.conf file:
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by videoconfig, the Zenwalk X Configurator.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command from runlevel 3:
# videoconfig

Any insight as to how may once and for all rectify my keyboard configuration? With the usual load of thanks!

Edit: I've managed to fix my keyboard configuration by resorting to neo's trick. I hadn't noticed that somehow the new X.org changed the usual Window$ and Screen-shooter key mappings (my system's default being F13 and F14 respectively).

Heartfelt thanks especially to bipbip and gmg as well for their generous, patient and continuous support throughout.
