Code:
The new netpkg did not work for me.  I could not get the GUI.

-> You need to install the gtkdialog package (gtkdialog is a beautiful wrapper between any interpreted language and GTK, working with an XML tree describing widgets, like XUL. It is very fast and optimized).

-> You should click the netpkg menu item (category system)
-> Or type "xnetpkg"

I hope it will help :)

I have the strangest problem, maybe...

i have d-l:ed and installed gtkdialog and netpkg3.0 but when i click the icon and enter the password, nothing happens.

Then i checked the /usr/share/applications/netpkg.desktop file and it says Exec=gksu xnetpkg, so i tried 'gksu xnetpkg', entered the password and the all-new netpkg started! I am puzzled  ???

I think the closest hint is that gksu that says i want to start 'netpkg' shouldn't it say 'xnetpkg' ?

See screenie!

Sometimes the icons (and the info behind them) in the menu don't get update until you log out and in again.

Have you tried running # netpkg netpkg via CLI and reinstalling the package ?

But still no xnetpkg.

There must be some sort of menu cache file i could delete ?

EDIT

i found it ! removed  /home/$ME/.cache/xfce4/desktop/* , logged out and in again and ... there it is, xnetpkg !!

I can't figure out why the cache wasn't updated correctly on your machine ???
Anyway, thanks for the way to solve the bug ;)

my impressions:
-when i installed (the new)netpkg with netpkg the gtkdialog pack was not installed automaticly, why?
-when gtkdialog is not installed xnetpkg only outputs: "Cleaning temporary files", no other info was printed, at least some error message would be useful.
-i know that netpkg uses a 'default' mirror, maybe when xnetpkg starts the default mirrors metadata would be automaticly loaded, and the "All Packages" filter selected. I, for one, when i started it for the first time i wrote some search terms, then messed with filters, and last selected a server, and even then, since xnetpkg did not show anything during the metadata loading process i though that did not work.
-i find that "click-on-a-pack-means-add-it-to-the-install-list" interface rather frustrating since i usually want to know some info about the pack before i decide to install it
-about the info, i find that one line of text to be less than useful, i'd rather have a full 'slack-desc' info listed, since i can get more info, like the homepage, ect
-i tested the install of K3B, since i did not have KDE on the test machine, selecting K3B put 'only' the K3B pack on the list, but installing it yielded a KDE-libs install too. This is rather bad behaviour since i was not informed/asked that this would happen.

my wishlist :D
-more info on the packages, i rather wait until i download a bigger metadata pack that has better descriptions on the packages, dependency info that i can read, ect
-no "auto-add-pack-if-i-click-on-it" let _me_ choose them
-show me what extra packages have to be installed since they are dependencies for my chosen packs. let me decide if i want them or not (maybe i already have my own pack, or i don't want to/can't download some extra 250Mb for a 10Mb pack)
-a progressbar for the metadata load process and make the interface freez during the load, also give me a CANCEL button if i dont want to wait anymore.

10x

The format of the file with dependency information has changed for the new netpkg. The old netpkg can't understand it. (EDIT: it seems to have reverted to the old format now.)

Then turn it off. It's just a setting in '/etc/netpkg.conf'.

:D i think i'll just wait until the Preferences menu entry appears in xnetpkg :D

I agree on both points. I selected the snapshot mirror to have a look at what was there.
The next morning I ran xnetpkg and noticed that there was a new audacious. When I installed it
it also installed xorg7.1, and X completely failed to restart after that.
I had to reinstall xorg6 manually. With a warning I would have noticed that I was using the wrong repository.
(incidentally, audacious 1.2 is working on my system with xorg 6.x)

- Could it also display the current repository you are using on the window somewhere ?

- I can see 13 versions of ndiswrapper in the list of packages, and 8 kernels, and after installing firefox-2.0, I can now see firefox-1.5.0.7 in the upgrade list. Is that normal, just temporary or a problem ?

- I would rather have the YATCFIP technology, or a switch beteen the two, even if it's harder to pronounce :-)
(You Are Two Clicks ...)

But all in all, I like it !

After installing the new netpkg I was surprised (although warned by the positive comments). The new look is great. One comment when the installation is new it was a bit confusing because you first have to select repository (named "network") to get a list of packages.
