ok I did all that, eth0 showed up as linked. I opened FF and got the home page. I then tried to get to zw.org(through google search, not address bar) to post that it worked and it just froze, saying it was waiting on google. I tried restarting zw, did networkconfig: linked no, driver tulip  ???. So I enter all the modprobe stuff again, now I have eth1(if I had any hair, I would finish pulling it out  :o). It still says tulip and not linked.

I have a good idea where to put the hammer,  ;)

Until we get this sorted out, the modprobe stuff has to be done everytime you boot. So, do:

modprobe -r tulip
modprobe dmfe

Then do: ethtool -i eth0 and post the output. This should tell the driver version. And I can tell if trying to install a new driver is worth the effort.

And are you sure the mtu is 1492? ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492
Check the MTU setting with ifconfig. There should be an entry in the third line.

And last, when you see that eth0 is linked, just do: ping -c 3 66.102.7.147. Don't go to FF home page.

Regards, jimbo

I was going to post the output of ifconfig eth0, but by the time I switched back to win2k(and feed the 2 year old and put the baby down to nap and blah, blah, etc...), I forgot the info; but I do remember that mtu was 1492. I still haven't figured out how to transfer stuff from zw to win2k or vice versa  :-\.

P.S. I really appreciate all the help  ;D

Put that hammer down!  ;D

The driver on the Davicom web site is newer, version 1.43. We could try to install the newer driver, but I don't know why you now have eth0 and eth1. It could be the driver or maybe a Zenwalk bug. Soooo, I suggest we get more "eyes" on this problem. Why don't you start a new thread in the Problems forum. Title, "Can't Get NIC to Link" or something similar. Reference this thread to provide more details about the problem.

Good luck, jimbo

ok I'll post it in the Problems forum. I'm also going re-install zw 4 so it will be a clean start, I haven't done anything with it except try to get it online-so I won't be losing anything except all these changes that we know don't work.

thanks for everything Jimbo,

Scott

Before you post, try this. I did a search in Zenwalk forum for Davicom and found what may be a solution.

Open /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file.

Add a line "blacklist tulip"    (No quotes.)
Delete the line: "blacklist dmfe"  (No quotes.)

Then reboot and try your internet connection.

Good luck, jimbo

Already posted, but haven't reinstalled yet  ;)

I will try that now, and post.

SUCCESS!!!!!

Between what you've suggested and what mykey said in the other thread, I'm happy to say I'm posting this from zw.  :o

Thanks for all your help jimbo.

This is pretty old now, but I've been searching for an answer to a 'fail to connect' problem for two days. That was the answer!

Thanks.

I suspect I'm becoming a Zenwalk fan ... I needed something for an emergency on a slow old box whilst I get a new power supply for my fast Fedora machine. Zenwalk was easy to install, easy to configure, and pretty fast considering the lack of cycles and RAM.

When the newer machine is repaired, I think I'll ditch Fedora and install Zenwalk.

Hey cfuttrup,

I did all that, in the Networkconfig. I don't believe I need a fixed IP.

I have a DSL broadband, and it is always logged on through LAN, with an ethernet/phone connection.

Scott

Do you know if the modem is configured to log you in (PPPoE)? If so, you really shouldn't need to do anything else.

I have assembled a computer for my daughter and her daughters, 8, 10 and 12 years old. It has a new motherboard and AMD_64 but the harddisk is old. Zenwalk 4.6.1. looks nice and I like it very much. I have already configured different XFCE-dekstops for the kids and their mother.

Some problems have appeared for the sake of the old hardware but I think we can live with them. But now a difficult problem: The computer is connected to D-Link DI-604 router and then to ADSL. Most Linux livecds recognice it and start Internet without any configuration. For Zenwalk's hard disk installation it was also easy to configure so that Internet is on when XFCE starts. But now, after some time, I must configure again the connection when starting. For me it's not a problem, but the computer would be located on the city of Oulu 40 kilometers from the village I live.

It is a common parlance, that Linux is a very reliable OS especially when compared to Windows. According to my experiences the opposite is true ;D

fossiili:
you may get a better response by posting this as a new problem, rather than tagging it on to the end of a very old post.

Sounds like your problem may be with the DHCP lease settings in your router. If the DHCP lease expires, and the PC is not picking up a new address, you'd likely have an event you described -- Internet connectivity is lost after a period of time.

A few thoughts to help you isolate the problem:
When the problem occurs, what do you see in /var/log/message with dhcpcd in the line?
What does ifconfig tell you?
Have you tried setting up the PC with a static address?

Once you have it resolved, head down to the port pubs and have one for me. : )
