Hi a2d2, the server wasn't responding yesterday alright but seems to be back up now. Thanks for the tip, I'll try tonight and see if I can set things up :) .

I tried setting up the ati driver under zw 4.0 using the wiki tutorial. It failed. So I read the most recent posts in this thread. Then I uninstalled the ati driver and tried installing the driver mentioned in a2d2's post. No joy. It gave me some errors - I can't remember all of them but it think they had something to do with directories. So I tried to reinstall the ati driver from ati. After running fglrxinfo again, I could tell it didn't work. So I rebooted hoping that would update things and all would be well. Oops. X won't start. No big deal since I had just installed 4.0 so no time was really wasted. But what are the new instructions under 4.0? Thanks.

john

After reading some posts in a different thread, I was able to get xorg started without reinstalling zen; however, I was not able to get the ati drivers working. After some trial and error, I got it working by doing these two steps:

1. netpkg kernelsource
2. follow these instructions: http://wiki.zenwalk.org/index.php/Main/ ... nGraphique

Hey all,

I used the excellent HOW-TO by utun1503 to install the ATI driver on my ZW 4.0 machine.  There were a few issues that I ran across, but I finally got it working.

Fglrxinfo gives me:
Code:
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6174 (8.31.5)

There are, however, still a few issues that I have run across that I would like to put before 'the collective':

1. I get the following when I run 'glxgears':
Code:
FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Permission denied)
__FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!
FGLTexMgr: open of shared memory object failed (Permission denied)
__FGLTexMgrCreateObject: __FGLTexMgrSHMmalloc failed!!!

18752 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3750.327 FPS
18807 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3761.259 FPS

I get the same errors when trying to run ut2004demo.

2. When I try to run enemy territory, it either crashes, or hangs up.  When I ++, fglrxinfo shows Mesa video drivers, instead of the 'Radeon 9600 Generic' driver.

3. When starting 'etswitch', I get the following:
Code:
*** You have XFree86-DGA loaded ***
Games (Quake3 based ones for example) using XFree86-DGA mouse hooks may not release mouse pointer,
read documentation on how to disable XFree86-DGA if in_dgamouse 0 doesn't work.
*** You have XFree86-DGA loaded ***

Any thoughts?

if u can run glxgears as root then your problem is you need to add:

Code:
tmpfs   /dev/shm   tmpfs   defaults   0   0

to your /etc/fstab

then type mount tmpfs

this should solve the first issue.

Thanks Kane.  I forgot to mount tmpfs.  In doing so, It screamed about a typo in my /etc/fstab.

One down .....
