Now that we have gtk+ 2.10 on Zen, can we expect a full GNOME 2.16.1 release?  :P

First off i would like to thank Zeqadious for all of his hard work and building and awesome lightweight Gnome package.

After reinstalling Zenwalk 4.2 the other day i was unable to find Zeqadious Gnome packages on any mirror or on Zeqadious website. When i go to http://zeqadious.homelinux.net/zenwalk/gnome/ i get a 404 error.

Any help locating Zeqadious Gnome packages would be greatly appreciated!

You were soooo close:

http://zeqadious.homelinux.net/zenwalk/ ... ree/gnome/

:)

Now keep in mind that as far as I know he hasn't released any of this. It may break your system, it may be the best packages on earth, I don't know.

All I know is that he is attempting to give you the best Gnome set possible and to do this he has changed a few things around. He's going to make an announcement when it's ready.

:)

My ZenGNOME is pretty close to finished, except for networkmanager (which works but only after a major manual overhaul of Zenwalk init).  I am currently working on smoothing this out and then I think ZenGNOME will be ready enough for some testers (other than myself) to begin finding the problems for me ;).  Please let me know doggtagg how ZenGNOME is working out for you as you are the only confirmed user to install it on 4.2 other than myself ;)

Any problems or difficulties or missing packages that would be more useful?  One reason I would like netpkg to show the directory the package in question is stored in would be to allow for the Minimal GNOME install still:

/a /ap /d /s /n /xap = Minimal GNOME
/extra/a /extra/ap /extra/d /extra/n /extra/s /extra/xap = Modular GNOME

This gnome is what I used to showcase to the folks at the Ubuntu forum. I used Zeq's gnome primarily on my Zenwalk 4.2 system. I find it nicer and easier for my needs than kde, xfce and fluxbox on my system.

It just looks and works beautifully. Only thing lacking in it was gdesklet not being available. But it is truly capable.

I'll come back to Zenwalk when I see official packages for superkaramba from extras repo.

Not having superkaramba limited the showcasing eye-candy wise of my Zenwalk system to others.

But Zeq's gnome setup is a force to be reckoned with. Even Sabayon in all its beauty and Ubuntu would be toasted when you compare the gnome implementaion of Zeqs with theirs. Awesome work.

I had a gDesklet buildscript somewhere.  Perhaps its time for me to dig it out and dust it off?  I would have to let users install their own desklets though don't you think?  I could never find full set of fully functional desklets that were good :(

Zeqadious,

Have you considered putting your gnome files in one package?

Since my Zenwalk machine only has slow dial-up capability, I typically download packages with a Windows machine on a T-1 connection and copy to my Zenwalk machine.  Thus, I cannot use netpkg, or any other linux package tool with dependency capability.

FYI, I hope that adding gnome to ZW 4.0 will straighten up some of the problems that I am having with XFCE crashes, just like the ones  canuck.farmboy mentioned in this thread.

My gnome used to be in 3 packages (gnome-libs, gnome-nautilus, and gnome-core).  This was VERY problematic and caused many discussions about what should and shouldn't be in them.  I want to give users the ability to choose what they want.  In your case simply downloading the tgz files in /a /ap /d /s and /xap will give you a minimal GNOME.  This should take approximately the same amount of time as installing the 3 packages I used to create and it will allow you to more quickly upgrade in the future as instead of a 15MB file to upgrade it will only be one of the many packages in the mentioned directories, all of which are much smaller than 15MB.

Zeqadious your gnome packages have been working great, the only problem i have had is with the clock applet. When i first started gnome up it got the following error:

Quote:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet".

Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

Other then that i havnt noticed any other problems.

'gnome-python-desktop' is a bundle of Python bindings for several libraries. About half of those libraries are part of standard Zenwalk and the rest of the libraries are part of your GNOME packages. If you want to install the Python bindings for one of the packages already on your system, then you have to install the whole bundle. The effect of this is that netpkg wants to install all the other libraries too, because they are listed as dependencies of 'gnome-python-desktop'.

There is no technical reason those bindings are in one bundle. Only an organizational one. Namely the fact the GNOME project put them in one tarball. Some other distros (Mandriva, Fedora, maybe more) have separate packages for all bindings. Could you do that too?

I ran into this problem when I was building a package of Meld. All the libraries it needs are in Zenwalk. Only the bindings are not.

@ doggtag: verify the following packages are installed:
evolution-data-server
nss
xulrunner
gstreamer
liboil
gst-plugins-base
gnome-panel

@ Tibors: I'll think about it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up as I really don't have the time right now to be changing the way I am packaging GNOME.  Perhaps in the future I may split them up.

I enabled this in netpkg and simply installed every app I saw there.  They installed fine. I'll take more time to see about getting gnome to launch from gdm. It fails t do so.

Perhaps I need to reinstall xorg?
