problems with ATi drivers

Hi,

Excuse me if this is the wrong place to ask, but i have problems with ATi drivers. It seems like ATi and 2.6.16.1 kernel don't work. Last kernel with i run ATi drivers was 2.6.15.4 and it works without any problems. yes i had to disable agp and dri in kernel.

I tried solutions which i have found on this page, like to add Load "dri" in module section and mode 0666 in section DRI. I didn't find file xorg.conf-new, just xorg.config-ati, but don't know what fore it is...

Hope that someone has solution.

Otherwise found zenwalk for really good distro.

hm, acctualy driver works, but 3d acceleration don't...

I'm having the same problem I think, with the previous kernel I just netpkg'd kernelsources, got the linux drivers from ati.com and installed them as root. Then ran 'aticonfig -initial', rebooted, added a 'dri' section to xorg.conf and everything worked fine. I got 3000+ fps running 'glxgears' and could play my games happily. But with Zenwalk 2.4 and the new kernel, I follow the same steps but get only around 200 fps in glxgears.

Gentlemen... Xorg 6.9 and ATi 3D drivers are known to be a highly unstable combo

. And only ATi is to blame for that.

. hopefully they'll poduce divers for 2.6.16...

It's not so much the kernel that's the problem... I heard on Xorg 7.0 it works ok, even ATi drivers.

i thought Xorg6.9 == Xorg7, more or less?

i use zenwalk for one day. i started with linux before approximately one year, and most of time i used slackware. well ATi 3dacc usually worked all the time.

what I'v noticed that with slackware my RAM (ca 884 MB-never compiled high mem) my system worked much faster, swap was almost allways emty and RAM barely sometimes full--again out off topic

apologies.

however, i couldn't accomplish 2.16.6 with ATi to work, using the same method which i'v used for all 2.16.5 which i tried (no agp and dri in kernel) $:-\$ ..'Zenwalk' looks relly nice hopfully i am going to find solution for this not so much importa grave problem. this with speed is much more annoying... I am not sure if the reason could be that at the moment i have no ATi modules loaded. I'v tried to install ati driver 8.23.7 and since then it seems there are no more ati modules loaded.

can bittorent make that system work slow???

you can savely use 2.6.15 on zenwalk 2.4 (i do so).
The reason why 2.6.16 is included is probably long maintainance. Adrian Bunk announced to maintain 2.6.16 after 2.6.17 will be out, so zenwalk could stay in 2.6.16 for some months and maybe keep the api

...or just use drivers provided by Xorg. They work well....at least on my PC...

The solutions offered are:

Patching the fglrx driver: I cannot find the file that need to be patched
Recompile the kernel to enable the obsolete intermodule: I cannot find the option to enable it when I ran make menuconfig

Anyone can help to me to move on?

Update:

When I ran make gconfig and enable show all option, I can see the option "OBSOLETE INTERMODULE" that I'm looking for. But the option is greyed and cannot be enabled. How to enable this option???

Iv'e just tried the new 8.24.8 drivers and they give the same error. I getting very frustrated.....on the verge of buying an Nvidia card :-[

hm, default kernel has dri enabled (as i know you must disable it if you want ati drivers to work). i'v tried to recompile kernel, and have no idea why it didn't work. acctualy i couldn't boot system any more.
i compiled kernel on slackware until now maybe 20 times, and now i have used the same schema but nothing. unfortunalty i have not had enough time to analyse problem becouse i should do something for school and i'v simple reinstall zenwalk.

is there anytho be considered when compiling kernel for zenwalk? and what should one do with modeprobe.conf file? what i did before is to delete file and to call generate-modeprobe.conf.
