I've installed 2 versions of zenwalk and now the live version and they all act the same. Any mouse click causes a reboot.

It's the only distro to act this way.

Roger.

Did you report this once before? (Someone did). It seems obvious to me that Zenwalk works flawless for almost everybody (anybody). Your case must be very exceptional. It sounds like this is happening right after you install the OS - i.e. without any configuring stuff (but the basic configuring done by Zenwalk itself). This means one of two things:

1) Zenwalk configures your computer in a way that your computer doesn't like, and as a mercyless reaction it reboots.
2) Some options that you make during the installation does not match your computer which it doesn't like, it reboots.

... There's of course the usual hardware problems which can play tricks, but I assume you have checked this before your bold statement, i.e. apart from Zenwalk a number of other Linux setups works for you. Have you tried to alter all your choices?

Also, did you make partitions for Zenwalk big enough to hold the installation? (what's your layout?)

More information on your system would be nice. The more info you give, the higher is your chance of getting anybodys attention - to help you.

Best regards,
Claus

Yes, a couple of times with no results.

How am I supposed to change anything? I install ZW, log in as root and any mouse click causes a reboot.

I have an AMD Athlon running at 850 MHz, 512Meg RAM, 120 Gb HD (40 and 80). hdb is partitioned into 17 partitions, about 5Gb each. 2 are swap files, the rest hold Puppy, PCLinuxOS, Mepius, Ubuntu, Kanotix, Vector, Zenwalk, Linux XP, Saboyon and GoboLiniux.

Zenwalk reboots, Gobo freezes, Puppy works perfectly.

I'm not sure about this so please check out, but I've read that linux kernel is trying ide devices as sata but there's a bug? when more than 15 partitions are used.  this could be the cause for your problem.

Maybe those distros using older kernel version or those using ide support instead of sata are the ones working well.

Again, I write this to give you a direction to look as I'm not sure.

IMO anyone using more than 10 partitions should go to a psychiatric  ;D

Could be I suppose but I read of someone with many, many more. Zenwalk is in partition 12 but even the live CD misbehaves.

These are all current versions.

LOL! It's just an easy way to compare distros. So far it's between Puppy and Vector. Easy installs, best hardware recognition, easy net setup.

Well, if your mouse is the culprit - how about changing mouse settings. (is it a PS/2 mouse / does it run through USB ... )

Maybe you need to run xorgconfig? It configures your video settings and mouse. When the zw bootsplash appears, hit tab. At the command prompt enter: zenwalk 3. When zw finishes booting, login as root. Then enter: xorgconfig. You will be able to set up your mouse (and you will have to set up your video settings again. So you need to know your specifications).

HTH.

john

P.S. I tried puppylinux on a laptop. I liked it because it could detect my wireless card. But after some trial and error, I was able to get zw to recognize the card. So I went with zw. Be patient. You can always use puppy without installing. It should fit in your memory without any problems. Use it until you get zw working. You won't be disappointed.

If you really think the mouse is the culprit: switch to a console and see how it behaves.

Ok, how do I get a console without using the mouse? That's sorta like saying "For help on connecting to the Internet, go to our website"

The mouse is a Logitech Marble PS/2

Yes, that worked but I don't know enough bash commands to do much of anything. I tried xorgconfig but it wanted more information than I had.

I guess I'll wait on Zenwalk until it's more idiot-proof.

Ever heard of the quote "If one designs a fool-proof system, only fools will want to use it."?

Don't wait for ZenLive to be fool proof, use it now and be klever  ;D

Hi Roger.

Please try to figure out the xorgconfig ... go ahead and fire it up as many times as you like. Walk through the system and collect the necessary information ... you can always kill the terminal window if you don't want to finish the job. I even think xorgconfig warns you when it is about to write the config file (I think you can type Ctrl-C to stop it from doing so).

Best regards,
Claus

hey, that really helped.

Now it reboots as soon as I get logged in.

It's complaining about "no screen"
